Don't you think it's odd that when we did, he disappeared? He hasn't posted after January 2010 returned its value. Coincidence?

Indeed, though perhaps he was frozen.

Confirmed @ 15.5c

Looks like the coolest April to July CET period since 1986

This is a very notable statistic it has to be said. Another chilly summer month. Maxes in the northern half of the country have been woeful, it has been the average and often slightly above average minima which has prevented July 2012 being a notably very cool month indeed.

Summer 2012 could end up colder than Summer 2011 and possibly the coldest since 1987 beating 1993 combined with how wet and dull it has been, it has a high chance of being the poorest summer for a good 25 years at least. Not sure how chilly summer 85 ended up or how wet and dull, however, I think this summer will beat it wetness wise and probably for sunshine. I think the last very cool very wet dull summer was 1980 or possibly 1978, anyone have the stats. Summer 86 whilst being cool was quite dry. Summer 88 was also very wet and dull but not quite as cold as 1987.

Going on a regional basis at least, the big difference with the late 80s summers is, bits of them were reasonable, or as you say were cool, but dry, or weren't far off average sunshine wise in some months. Such as June 1986, mean max of 20.0c at Ambelside, 217 hours of sunshine at Aspatria and highest max's widely of 27 and 28 degrees. i think June 1988 was also a good month. The big difference with this summer is that both months are record dull and wet, and rotten on mean maximums, what will determine this summer is if it is a 3 strike horror, of if august can save it somewhat to be more in line with the late 80s summers

Edit- i was about to say 1985 was a 3 month horror, but despite that june being as cool as this one, sunshine was average, as was rainfall

Just a minor point, but isn't 2000 in the 20th century (not this 21st century)? The convention is to end decades with a year ending in zero although in popular parlance the "60s" for example would be 1960 to 1969, I suppose, although I lived through them and think they were 1965 to 1974.

I guess this is the same argument as people had about when the new millennium began.

Would imagine there is an official answer and a public opinion preference on this, but fairly sure the official definition would take a century from 01 to 00.

Quite right of course Roger, since there was no year 0 & we went from 1bc to1ad. 2000 was the 2000th year so the milennium should have been celebrated on 1/1/01. But then the whole world has dumbed down & inconvenient facts are best ignored!

Interestingly, the last third of July over England and Wales was dry and sunny but fairly cool:

http://www.climate-uk.com/page2.html

Sunshiine totals in much of Scotland and northern England were languishing at between 35% and 55% of normal for 1st-25th July, so presumably the bright showery end to the month helped to raise totals in those regions, while further south a dry sunny spell followed by a bright showery one produced a considerable excess of sunshine. Nonetheless, the exceptionally dull weather up until the 20th prevented any regions from reaching average amounts of sunshine. Temperatures, despite the warm interlude in the last third, clearly stayed below all recent 30-year averages including the old 1961-90 one.

It is stunning that such a month has such a hot and sunny week [at least for some areas] included. imagine what the figures would have been if it had stayed unsettled that week.

I have calculated the figures and they are attached.

Monthly - well done as mentioned to virtualsphere and coram

Seasonal - The top 3 are DR Hoskin, virtualsphere and Terminal Moraine

Overall - the Top 3 are reef, DR Hosking and Thundery wintry showers

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
