On the 16th January 1955, some Londoners thought it was the end of the world when between 1 and 2pm, there was a spectacular spell of daytime darkness as a cold front pushed southwards trapping a layer of smog

In Dec 1962 I was working in the Met Office at Heathrow when we had freezing fog for a while with an almost constant -5C night and day - fortunately that was the last real pea souper I recall - shortly after that the Clean Air Act came in and that has made a great difference.
