Sally Ride, who was the first American woman into space has died from cancer aged 61. She was part of the Space Shuttle Challenger's crew in 1983. She was the 3rd woman In space after Tereshkova in 1963 and Savitskaya in 1982.

Quite young by today's standards as well but it's the quality of life which counts rather than it's length - I'm sure she will be sadly missed.
