First 10 Days September - On Average Mostly Settled?

I was reading a book the other day and it said on average the first 10 days of September bring the driest and most settled conditions of the year.

Certainly in recent years the start of September has often been accompanied by very pleasant often dry and warm conditions.

I'd be interested to see if there is any truth in this statement. Could someone post the stats for temperatures and rainfall in england and wales for the first 10 days of septmeber for say the last 20 years.

I've often thought nationwide your more likely to see a fine settled warm spell of weather in early september than at any other time..

No rain this month, but late May was by far the sunniest and driest period.

I've no statistical evidence to support it, but it does seem that way over the last 5 years or so at least in the South East

September is traditionally the harvesting month when spring sown crops were the norm.

Still is the case further north with wheat especially.

Ground is dry (usually) and the reducing solar input means showers have lost the energy we see in July and August.

Here September is more or less 3-way tie with March and May for the driest.

I have many memories of going back to school and the weather being fine and dry. Whether that lasted or not depended on the particular September but most first weeks back at school after the summer were like a continuation of summer.

In terms of dryness - here's a list of the first ten days of September's rainfall over the last few years in this location:

2011: 39.8mm

2010: 26.9mm

2009: 27.2mm

2008: 129.9mm

2007: 0.0mm

2006: 25.0mm

2005: 23.4mm (all of which on the 10th during a thunderstorm)

2004: 13.5mm (all of which on the 10th)

2003: 9.8mm

So if tomorrow doesn't deliver much rain in this neck of the woods then it would be the second driest start to September since 2007.

2002: 37.8mm (24.7mm of which on the 9th)

Thanks for these stats - apart from 2008 most recent Septembers have delivered fairly dry starts to the month it appears - and these stats are for the wetter SW so I imagine many eastern parts would have seen much drier starts. I don't remember 2007 that much.. I think that september and the autumn as a whole was preety non-descript. If you only went up to the 9th then 2004 and 2005 would have also joined 2007 for no rain in your neck of the woods. I'd be interested to see temp stats as well. 2012 has also seen a dry first 9 days but now breaking...

Very true. In terms of average maximum temperature:

2011: 20.6C

2010: 22.4C

2009: 20.5C

2008: 17.7C

2007: 21.9C

2006: 22.8C

2005: 24.0C

2004: 24.7C

2003: 20.5C

2002: 20.0C

Most of these are on a par with average July and August maxima in this neck of the woods i.e. between 21 and 24.
