I always thought it was just a matter of chance really. Late last week it didn't seem certain that the storm would even reach the UK. I always felt that the worst of the weather (rain anyway) would be where the front ground to a halt after moving north. It seems like this has happened over the north of England, particularly on the western side.

In terms of strong winds, then a strong September storm would be very unlikely to equal a strong storm in, say, December or January, so we still have that to look forward to.

There's still a chance of interesting weather here before all this finishes anyway, imo.

Whoever said in an earlier post that there may be some early morning lightning was spot on. Quite a bit over Norwich at 05:00 am in the south. Lovely. Very clear starry morning too with Orion high above and saw a couple of very high meteorites.

Now if you want to discover the secret to long life and happiness, you better get yourself onto the coast in Sussex:

Sea air the secret of long life as census shows Bexhill-on-Sea is Britain's centenarian capital

Perhaps it is the fresh sea air or the sunshine, but for almost 200 years the residents of Bexhill-on-Sea have been noted for their longevity.

Now that reputation has been borne out by official figures, after the first detailed analysis of last year’s census showed that the Sussex resort has more centenarians per head of population than anywhere else in the country. According to a breakdown of returns published yesterday, there are 66 people over the age of 100 in the borough of Rother, which centres on Bexhill.

A further 1,722 residents are in their 90s, with almost 7,000 in their 80s out of a total population of 90,600.

Remarkably, the second and third highest concentrations of centenarians are in neighbouring Worthing and Eastbourne while the Arun area of Sussex also makes it into the top 10 alongside the Scilly Isles, Torbay and Bournemouth. But Bexhill’s place at the top of the list will some as no surprise to locals.

A print hanging in the town’s museum commemorates a special dinner in 1819 attended by 25 gentlemen in their eighties – a unusual feat at the time, with 15 in their 70s waiting at the tables. Its headline reads “A Remarkable example of Longevityâ€.

First settled in Anglo Saxon times, the village was known for its health properties even before it was developed as a coastal resort in the first half of the 19th Century.

Although it does have some mineral springs, plans to develop Bexhill as a spa floundered because of the metallic water was judged unpalatable. During the age of Empire it was a popular place for British colonial officials to send their children to be educated, boasting around 350 boarding schools. Its reputation as a place to retire was already firmly established a century ago.

“There is a local joke that people retire to Bexhill and then forget to die,†said Julian Porter, curator of Bexhill Museum.

“It was always seen as a healthy place, a safe place and of course very sunny.â€

A recent survey ranked Bexhill as the sunniest resort in Britain, with as much as four hours of sunshine per week more than the average for seaside towns in Britain.

I guess the warning, posted by MK above, is because the wind direction will change later and bring them onshore. Could be an interesting night for those near the coast (and a little way inland) then; I'm guessing there must have already been heavy showers earlier this morning in South Kent, Sussex etc. due to the winds being onshore?

Substantial shower when I woke up around 5.30 this morning and I did contemplate turning over and calling in with a sicky!! As i never have, I couldn't bare the guilt of being in bed all day feigning illness.....
