I think it's worth it's own thread, even if it's not that significant. It should provide the first frost for many. We get threads asking when the first 20c or 25C will be in the Spring...why not one when there's potential for the first frost? Every year the lateness of the first frost has been a dicussion point, so it's very relevant to discuss the first one. (Missed the boat a little as some of us here in the Midlands have already achieved our first frost!)

Also, as seen already in one report, we have members in the far north who need to tell us when they get their first snow. Always good to know when the white stuff has started to fall on the UK. I don't want snow discussion to be confined to regional threads yet. At this early stage...all of us south of Scotland like to know when it first arrives I'm sure! Later in the season, we can all run off into our regional threads and leave the Scots to it because hopefully we'll have some of our own snow to discuss (although will still be wanting to look in at the insane snow amounts north of the border!). But for now, this thread is very relevant as I'm very interested to see what is happening in the far north.

I'm a little dissappointed that the cold front itself won't be that interesting though. Be good to get a quick squall through here again!

Was it? There was never the potential for lowland snowfall away from the NE of Scotland and the Northern Isles. This thread is now defunct. This is no different to that little cool pool we had in October 2010 which didn't receive any attention or dedicated threads.

I'm sure you know already, but if a thread doesnt interest you, there is actually no requirement for you to either post into it or read it! Some people are going to see some snow, it's the first cold shot of the season and it's created interest - if it's not your thing, fine but that's not to say others don't have an interest.

And with that in mind, please can we get this back to being the cold/chilly snap discussion rather than the what Aaron thinks warrants a thread discussion, thanks :D

So..um...where is the cold front right now? Will there be anything on it to suggest it has arrived or will it be a 'dry' one?

Is it simply going to be a case of noticing that it's a tad chillier once it's gone through or will it make it's presence known?

Just for fun: Anyone else playing 'spot the most southern snow symbol' on the xcweather.co.uk forecast? Looks like Bridlington has it at the moment!

Even if there IS no lowland snowfall, it's still interesting to see what happens further up North. If we get some sleet in EA over the weekend-I'll be happy with that for now. biggrin.png and there is always the possibility of the outlook changing. Nothing can be ruled out completely where the weather is concerned.

Wells said K. acute.gif The blinkered views of some are simply misleading and plague many a thread within these forums too.

It always was a more Northern based cold spell and I for one will be happy to see OTHER REGIONS get their share. smiliz39.gif The model outputs are only deterministic forecasts so that means the future is t+1 minute from any particular issued run. If everybody in here became clairvoyant overnight, then how boring would weather watching, be then. search.gif

I hope the tone of my post doesn't sound condescending to some, as I am simply trying to help any lurkers or new model watchers or those simply new to the climate game. good.gif

As things currently stand I thought my earlier post summed up things nicely in my opinion, but then again, I would say that. rofl.gif

There will be clear sky behind it which is something this region hasn't seen (except for a few small breaks yesterdaypm/at dawn today) since last Saturday!!!

Hopefully we'll know by the appearance of sky that isn't uniformly dirty grey and doesn't produce fine drizzle all the time! Temp be damned, it's an end to the endless clag that I'm looking forward to :D

I still see the main threat of snow to be in Scotland and then only on higher ground. But the temps are already starting to fall 'Op Narth' and this animation shows how it drops down to the South over the next couple of days:

I wasn't entirely sure where to put this one.

Anyway, BBC Sport Football text has just claimed the following whilst covering the match......

21:55 It's snowing in Newcastle.

I'm guessing it's no more than a bit of hail or sleet, but I'd love to be proven otherwise.

It was actually drizzle which reflected under the white floodlights at SJP which gived it a "sleety" look, made me laugh when the commentator said it was "sleety-snow"

Here is something that should help increase a more positive feel towards the snow risk..

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Headline:

Wintry showers east, dry and sunny west. Cold northeasterly winds.

Today:

Cloudy with occasional rain in the south at first, clearing southwards, otherwise bright and breezy. Plenty of sunshine in the west, cloudier periods in the north and east bringing scattered wintry showers, with hail and possible thunder. Cold northeasterly winds.

Tonight:

Wintry showers continuing in the north and east, with snow as far south as East Anglia, and with temporary accumulations possible even at low levels. Clear, cold and frosty elsewhere.

Saturday:

Further showers eastern areas, wintry at first; sunny but cold further west. Becoming cloudier in Scotland and Northern Ireland with rain spreading from the northwest, preceded by hill snow.

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday:

Becoming generally unsettled with temperatures returning to nearer normal. Spells of rain or showers for most areas, with drier periods between. Strong winds at times, especially on Sunday.

Issued at: 0341 on Fri 26 Oct 2012

This is the new update this morning by the Met Office.

A brief todayer which is a pity considering how it originally showed up. Not much of chance of any white stuff here bar frost. Snow to the north and east of us. Then milder conditions return on Sunday with close to average temps.

I'm still going with snow confined to the highest ground in Scotland and just generally cold and windy everywhere else. Looks like it's going to be cold and very wet in Western Scotland and the North West on Sunday:

Quite a bit of wind about to bring the Windchill right down up there (glad you are all hardy!!)

hir_gusts_eur60.png

Temps look to be quite low in comparison to recent ones, but the wind will make it feel much, much colder:

Possible snow forecast tonight here in Cambridge. Will wait and see, won't get my hopes up too much. Seems to be this time of year, the best time for snow is overnight like in 2008. Anyone else seeing snow at the moment / expecting it tonight?
