August 1997 was the second warmest August on record with a CET of 18.9C and one of the warmest months on record. In the early stages of the month there were thunderstorms and torrential in the south and southwest. There were many warm humid nights during the month.

Here are forecasts from this month.

    1st August

    2nd August

Oh yes. I remember how hot and sticky it was that month. We had some quite nice thunder storms in York and all the shops sold out of fans very quickly. I know, I spent all one afternoon hunting one down.

We had a thunder storm on 31st August and a tornado disrupted the main East Coast Railway that day as well. It was a good day. :D

Yes, I remember those humid nights. Was living in Southampton at the time, and have just checked the stats - the weather centre there recorded an average minimum of 16.2 - I think that was the highest since records began there in 1855 - and an average overall for the month of 20.0.

I think a lot people don't remember it as a good day after what happened

My cousin got married on 30th August and it was a reasonable day, although it did rain at the evening do making for a wet drive home from Tavistock to Plymouth after. Ironically she decided at the last minute to bring the wedding forward a week, and we all know what happened the following Saturday......

Funny my memory of this month is more about the last week of the month rather than the heat before that. Part of this is because I spent the 10th-20th in the south of France and whilst it was hot down there it was nothing out of the ordinary. The week running up to the tragic death of Lady Di though has stuck in my head as being terribly stormy, dark and gloomy. More like November than August.

This preceded a lovely spell of weather in September that was to last almost 6 weeks of unbroken warm sunshine.

I was 12 at the time, and I remember it being a muggy month. Never forgot a thundery day on a day trip to Stratford in the middle of that month.

Again, one event from that month is obviously Diana's death. It happened on my parent's wedding anniversary.
