25th November 2010.

It's not that unusual to have a significant snow event towards the end of November but this one just went on and on.

There was almost a foot of snow by the end of the month with further snowy spells and increasing cold until after Christmas.

Some cold temps out there already this evening, widely 2/3c in rural areas. Chopgate, an excellent frost hollow in the NYM down to 0.3c already. Expecting an air frost tonight and tomorrow here :)

Chilly with ground frost on the roof but it doesn't seem to want to go below 3C.

Must say we've had the driest spell since March with only 8mm in the last 14 days.

Should be a mainly dry week coming up as well after some patchy rain on monday.

Posting in the northern thread as we are currently at budle bay Northumberland. Last night was very chilly, but gave incredible clear skies and not much light pollution, compared to where I live! Saw so many stars and my boyfriend said he saw a shooting star or meteor. Said was very bright. Love the north and the people here. Newcastle tomorrow.

Snow lying days, Newcastle, past 5 snow seasons (November-March)

2006-07: 0, 0, 1, 2, 1 4

2007-08: 0, 0, 2, 1, 1 4

2008-09: 1, 4, 1, 7, 1 14

2009-10: 0, 12, 14, 5, 0 29

2010-11: 6, 17, 0, 1, 0 24

(excludes 2011-12 because the statistics had not quite came in yet.)

The average is 0, 2, 3, 3, 1, which equals 9

Just to bear that in mind if we're crying over a marginal event this winter! 9 days is the average, this isn't snow central by any mean, but there are situations where we are the best in the nation for it.

Where do you get such statistics from? Are they assumed figures from the Met Office anomaly/actual maps?

Very mild out there today, 12.7c although the wind is taking the edge off the feel. Wind is increasing giving gusts around 30mph atm, expecting gusts of 40 maybe 50mph a bit later on.
