And it is certainly COLD!!! http://www.wundergro...ions/24959.html

Winter hasn't tightened it's grip yet there either. They usually get as low as -55C or -60C

Yes, I have the Yakutsk weather as one of the cities on my phone. Love watching the temperatures there. They first had an ice day towards the end of September and it's been consistently below freezing since the latter part of October. Coldest I saw for last winter was -48, so nothing too extreme!

I do the same on my Iphone's "weather" tab, every winter I select the coldest places it has available. Yakutsk is nearly always the coldest place but is occasionally bested by the likes of Alert, Canada and Fairbanks, Alaska. Ulan Bator is surprisingly cold, too. Coldest to warmest (in terms of consistency) usually goes something like this:

Yakutsk, Alert, Fairbanks, Barrow, Yellowknife, Churchill, Iqaluit, Ulan Bator, Omsk, Tomsk, Novosibirsk, Astana, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Vorkuta, Murmansk, Arkhangelsk, Nuuk.

The Canadian praire cities are very hit and miss, they can be amongst the coldest one day and comfortably the warmest the next. Alert stays coldest for longest, it never really gets anything like warm.

I believe that Ulan Bator has the distinction of being the coldest capital city on earth. One day I'm going to do the trans-Siberian/manchurian railway. Maybe we should organize a netweather tour!

Sounds good good.gif . Yeah it's useful pub ammo, that one. Most people usually think it's Moscow which is in 3rd place behind Astana, Kazakhstan.

Having lived in Edmonton i can say like most Prairie cities it never get comfortably warm during the winter..only Calgary is the exception to this rule.

The air is pretty dry there and minus 44oC with dry air is surprsingly less cold than you might think. Dont get me wrong its bloody cold. I was quite nervous the first time I experienced temps like that but once I was wrapped up and had all skin covered and went outside (for a brief minute) it wasnt a killer lol

I love the chinook winds in winter :-) I bet you're happy you moved to Calgary. Did you hear about the reasearcher who got enticed to Endmonton but handed back the $10 million grant after spending a winter there lol.

Funnily enough i actually prefer Edmonton to Calgary as a city..in terms of weather i dont think there is much to choose between them...this will be my first winter in Calgary and the prospect of milder interludes is appealing..however i think the summers are better in Edmonton...but the winters are too long and too cold even for me.
