Welcome to The Snow Hunters Club, if you like snow and want to know where it might fall, then this is the place to be!

Here we take a close look at where snow is possible over the days ahead throughout winter.

I would prefer that if charts are posted that they are only weather type charts or snow charts, or precipitation charts indicating sleet/snow and with a description of what is shown and areas affected.

The cold has set in and looks like lasting through the weekend, Scotland could get snow on Friday over the mountains and lower hills, a risk of this getting to low levels, this snow risk spreading south but most likely affecting East UK coastal areas Saturday and Saturday night as a feature develops here, on Monday a strong weather system moves in from the Atlantic bringing heavy downpours and gales, this system hitting the cold air could bring snowfall to northern hills depending on how the cold develops and how the low tracks in.

It's freezing out there and for some it won't only be frost that your scrapping off the windows...

Through Friday Scotland could see some accumulated snowfall over the hills, progressively even affecting to lower levels through the day, this risk pushing into Northern England later Friday and into Saturday, over the weekend some snow showers from a North-Sea feature could develop snow down the east side of the UK most likely coastal zones and as far south as East Anglia i expect, now there is the chance depending on the cold spell development that we get the snow showers into SE England late Saturday, but for now i have done a small map to indicate the snow risk in high to moderate risk zones. (for those that view my maps, i am trying to get the maps more simple and smaller size, and below is a go at that)

Scottish mountains are accumulating a decent cover with Cairngorm and Lecht ski centre's going for a Saturday opening. More frequent snow across Scotland overnight tonight with some down to low levels. I would go for a punt at 200m ASL.

Interesting to note that there is a brief westerly front blowing in from Sunday with the cold following back in from the N.West on Monday. Could bring some very good snow but as of yet, the BBC weather isn't modelling anything in that time frame. One to keep an eye out for.

Weather system moving across all areas Sunday, a front hitting the cold block is likely to create a significant frontal snow event for Northern England and Scotland late Sunday and into Monday-orange boxed zoned area, several hours of snowfall is likely for some areas, significant accumulations are likely over hills, even some low levels could get a covering.I have drawn a map of this snow risk using the latest model output data from this evening.

Map below:

post-11361-0-24237300-1354405072_thumb.g

For areas in the yellow boxed area further south there is the risk of falling sleet or wet snow for a while before turning to rain, this risk highest to the north and east of the yellow boxed zone, i don't expect any settling snow over the yellow box zone. The far north yellow zone could get some heavy snow showers.

The timing of, the track of the system, and the intensity of the precipitation all playing a part in how this snow event develops, for example is the mild sector shifts further south then the SE/EA gets in on the risk of snow settling.

It looks as though Monday if a milder day in the south, but then quickly turning cold again from Tuesday, and a cold wintry outlook for all areas

A weather system moves down from the north through Tuesday, this occluded front bringing much colder air down to the south by wednesday. Through Tuesday heavy snowfall is likely to arrive over Scotland and becoming prolonged through the afternoon or evening and giving some large accumulations over the hills, with snow settling to low levels to, this snow heading into northern England into Tuesday night and pushing south into Wednesday, i'm not confident at this stage of how much snow could fall as it moves south, although i expect areas like the Midlands to see settling snowfall, the lowest risk for snow is the far south, inland areas north of London and into East Anglia could get some sleet or snow.

Following the occluded front are shower troughs, these soon getting into Scotland giving significant snowfall Tuesday night and Wednesday, an area of sleet and snow showers could affect the east coast areas and down as far south as EA later Wednesday.

Below is a map to show the areas most at risk from snow on Tuesday and Wednesday:

Wednesday 5th December

Across England we have a developing potential snow event, this arriving into Southeast England through this morning, heavy snow showers are over Scotland, and sleet or snow showers down the East coast heading into Northeast England, i have drawn up a snow map on where i expect the snow to fall, Scotland, the Midlands, East Anglia, London and the Southeast at highest risk of heavy snow through this morning, and also near east coastal areas seeing potential snow showers, these are already into Scotland and running down the East coast now, with an area of moderate/heavy wintry sleet and snow across central UK(Midlands..)heading south.

Some areas could see a covering of snow or adding to snow cover.

Moderate Risk of the SE snow event -

For London and the SE i expect 1-2cm widespread with as much as 5cm on the hilly areas, there is the risk of more maybe up to 10cm in some local spots-if this does occur then i expect this to affect the areas north/west/south of London over the higher routes. There have been upgrades to this snow event since tuesday evening, with an increasing risk of this event producing a covering of snow for many Southeast areas this morning.

Where has this come from!? Already about 1-2 cm so far in Luton. Thought this wouldve been just a higher ground event (Im about 500ft amsl) but obviously not looking at the previous post!

I too was not expecting this. When the Met forecast a light dusting I didn't expect 2 inches. I mean it's not exactly deep at all, but it's more than a light dusting.

Thanks for the heads up ESS.

Warnings are out as a new weather system moves in from the northwest, this bringing heavy snowfall to Scotland through the early hours of this morning and into the afternoon and through the evening, hills getting significant accumulations, low level snowfall is likely to, this snow pusing into Northern England through the day giving some large accumulation over the hills with a risk of low level snow. For the Midlands, East Anglia and the Southeast there could be some sleet or snow, this most likely to be the back edge snowfall during the early hours of Friday i expect. There is the risk of North Wales seeing hill/mountain snowfall.

Taken off map i posted a few hours ago and replaced with the updated one, i have added dotted lines to the upgraded areas for snow risk, the colour code of the dotted lines are the same as the lined colours.

Upgrade to snow risk using latest model data - the changes are now an increased risk of hill snow with a risk of low level snowfall across East Anglia, London and the South-east, for early hours Friday with a risk of some sleet/snow before that on the front edge of the fronts, the snow risk for Wales upgraded to affect more areas of Wales, this snowfall most likely over the high ground.

The edited snow warning map is below:

(Note Zone 2 warning area now includes all of the South-east)

I'm in St.Albans, Hertfordshire and it rained all night, stopped from 2am till 7am then started raining again which then turned to snow at around 8am and is still snowing and pretty heavily I must say, it has settled a little bit on the car windowscreens which I think is because of the temp drop, it got from 1.9oC at 5am to 2.7oC around 7am and then the temp has slowly dropped and is now at 1.6oC

It's likely to become increasingly cold through next week, and for some very cold night and daytime temperatures to, i have done a map on where i expect any snow to be on Monday and Tuesday, wintry showers down the East coast with sleet and snow at times over the period Mon-Tue, areas of East Anglia and Kent nearer to the coast could get some more heavier snow showers, with Suffolk, Norfolk, Essex, Kent, and possibly eastern side of East Sussex late Monday and into Tuesday seeing a risk of a snow streamers or persistant sleet/snow showers, the snow showers blown in on a north to northeasterly flow, models are indicating a potential line of snow showers that could push into Southeastern coasts Monday night and early Tuesday.

There is the risk of snow cover although at this stage it would be difficult to say but i do expect 1-2cm from any snow showers more particularly across the above said areas, also into some eastern coastal areas maybe further inland to. For example if the expected snow streamer did set up from the North sea and headed into Kent then we could be looking at several cm's.

There is the risk of some snow in the following areas giving a dusting or light covering, nothing significant is expected but 1-2 cm's possible, this most likely in the northern boxed zones.

Slight dusting for parts of the South with isolated snow, although a slight covering is possible.

Risk is for Wednesday 12th December(today)

Using latest model data and radar images

-

Parts of southern England

-

Cumbria

-

Scotland - Strathclyde, Dumfries & Galloway, Lothian and borders, Grampian and possibly Tayside, also some snow showers into the far north of Scotland and Islands/Shetland
