Nunthorpe just south but significantly higher than Middlesbrough has had the best part of two inches. Lovely stuff.

A CAR has careered on to a railway line and been hit by a train on the A69 near Haltwhistle in Northumberland as icy weather conditions grip the region.

It happened at 4.25pm today when, for reasons yet to be established, the car left the A69 between Greenhead and Haltwhistle in Northumberland and crashed onto a railway line.

A Young male has been taken to hospital by Air Aubulance with serious injuries

The train involved is a freight Train

The car is thought to have received a glancing blow from the train.

The train stopped further down the line and does not appear to have suffered significant damage and no one on board appears to have been injured.

Paramedics are dealing with one casualty, the car passenger, and no-one on the train is thought to have been hurt.

Replacement road transport is not available due to deteriorating weather conditions passengers are advised not to attempt to travel between Newcastle and Carlisle for the rest of the evening.

Loads of crashes now as even the main roads had a covering earlier, and it has now frozen over.

Just got back from York. No snow until a few miles from the Wolds and the road from Garrowby to Fridaythorpe is really treacherous and very slow because of sheet ice. Further east you get the thicker the snow and a good 6cm here, so very happy, apart from nearly losing it on the drive!

The 850s remain at around -3/-4 tomorrow in NE England, so it is really just the temperatures/dew points which will cause problems. I'm going for a snow-rain-snow event, with most of the snow being quite wet and sleety. The NAE is forecasting that, and it is usually decent, although I can think of quite a few major busts. It nailed Sunday night though if I remember correctly, with snow in the far NE and a wintry mix for Leeds, Yorkshire etc, and that's pretty much what happened.

Very cold feeling day what with the breeze and an air temperature of 3c ,there was and is plenty of ice under foot due to the precipitation last night .Current temperature is 0.5c and clear, the wind has died down somewhat also.

The daily express said today temperatures could fall to -25C in the north they may not be far off going by what Loch Glascarnoch is at now

I don't think no matter how much the Gritters lay down it makes much difference given freezing-rain just freezes over anything including grit-salt. Come the morning when it all melts the grit simply washes away ready for the next re-freeze.

nothing here apart from rain and tomorrow looks likely to be brief rain to snow job.after that an easterly looks favourite but we need a really strong unstable flow to get the rewards in the north west.give me a grrenlanf high every time over a scandy block .

HD

we have just seen the run of the decade from the ECM if that verified the whole country would stop

i have just saved that run just for the pleasure it produced, granted it wont happen like that, but half that would do

me fine.

Yeah - could be one or two light flurries this evening. I don't want the temperature to rise though so the snow cover doesn't go slushy and turn to ice! No chance of rain tonight with 850s of -9, rising to -5ish by daylight tomorrow, but an increase in cloud would certainly prevent the temperature from getting really low. It must be 0C or lower out there as the car has frozen solid.
