Mighty confused right now.

Quick question to the more experienced poster, what needs to happen for a Thames streamer to happen. I'm here in Gravesend praying for that the happen. :0)

Also,

You hear us all banging on about ENE flow, certainly for members in N., N.W.Kent and S.E.London, primarily because that direction of flow means the air maintains contact with a source of moisture, i.e Thames Estuary, for as much time as poss. before hitting N.W.Kent, S.E.London, with still moisture laden clouds, as opposed to NE flow and straight E.

With NE flow, air has to track the length of E.Anglia, Essex and air drys out over cold land (cold air doesnt hold moisture well) and showers dont penetrate that far inland, say as far as Norfolk, Suffolk, N.E.Essex. N.E. flow is far more likely to produce snowfall for the Mid-Kent coast, say east of the Medway Towns, than N.W.Kent. E.Kent do best for snowfall when flow is N.N.E., so air can have track over sea, as far away as the region between Norway and Holland.

Theses streamers form during phases when synoptics are conducive for those other parameters mentioned in that description about Lake-Effect snow, are likely to be met. Hope that wasnt too rambling and made sense!

Regards,

Tom.

when you look at the models and see a big low pressure coming in from the west

expect the charts to struggle with its eventual location

say 120-144 as a rule of thumb

when the lows are showing t36 sometimes

however if you see a low in summer t384 is normally right rofl.gif

Well knock me down with a feather!!! Has anyone noticed the line of heavy ppn that has formed just to the ~South of the South coast??

Will make things very interesting if that continues to form... Such a shame it is so far West!

Hi 2810lollypop,

Always find Hastings does well when the flow is from the N.E. Have a look at a map of Kent/Sussex and draw a line back from Hastings towards the NE. The flow will have entered the coast around mid-Kent and as the distance is relatively short, snow showers normally have enough oomph to deposit some snowfall right down to the E.Sussex coast.

Cheers,

Tom.

Where in W11 are you? Here in Kensal Green it looks less like snowing than at any time since last Thursday. Freaky.

Ok guys, thanks. Enjoy the snow you have lets hope we have both an ENE flow and a NE flow in February.

I'll leave you with a couple of classic Thames Streamer-type synoptic charts. Note the very cold 850 temps, easily satisfying the criteria of temp. differential between upper-air and sea surface.

Westbourne Grove, but there were only a few flakes for a few mins. Nothing at all to take notice of I'm afraid...

Was just about to post that anyway, but have wasted the past 15 mins looking out of the window with a torch!! :D

Wow is it mad out on the south downs right now, and has been for hours now.

I drove to Ditchling Beacon tonight about 10pm, and it was full on side ways snow massive flakes.

drifting big time on the road along the top of the beacon, 2 farmers were there in jcbs digging it out already, but within just 30 minutes bits they had done were already drifting over again. it came up to my jeans belt when i got out!

I have some pictures, but will have to upload in morning as got work at 6am and can't find my lead for camera.

it was still snowing hard and drifting when i left at 12:30am, I couldnt pass falmer road to woodingdean as drifting has closed the road plus the police man said someone had died in a crash :(

where i live just few miles away is 1 mile from coast and no snow really, wet snow sleet mix, amazing the difference a bit more height is making tonight, and im guessing this is very localized tonight by looks of this thread.

Morning crazy_diamond and all,

About another cm of snow here overnight, it has settled on the treated surfaces as well as the existing snow, a nice little top up but nothing to get too excited about really, I think Friday will be more interesting even if it is snow to rain !
