Updated METO advisorysmile.png

A spell of sleet and snow is expected, starting in the early hours of Monday morning in southwest England, and affecting southern England more widely by the end of the morning. Snow will be accompanied by a strong easterly wind which will accentuate the very cold feel. Accumulations of 2-4 cm of snow could occur quite widely over southern counties, with a risk of 5-10 cm over Dartmoor.

The public are advised to be aware of the risk of localised disruption to travel.

That very much reflects what Ian F said on the MOD earlier this morning

Chief Forecasters assessment:

A low pressure system moving up from the Atlantic will come up against the influx of cold air from the north, bringing persistent sleet and snow. At the same time winds will increase, with gusts to 50 MPH on coasts and hills. At this stage there is uncertainty about how far north precipitation will push, and also the extent to which snow will settle on the recently warmed ground. This warning will be updated again during Sunday morning.

Its a coming! The next 24 hrs will be very interesting model watching!

Also met going for 20-30 mph winds gusting 50-55 mph drifting could be a big problem....

Hard to remember the last decent March snowfall in our area, probably my memory playing tricks.

The latest snowfall I can remember was the April 6th 2008 event.

Frontal system pushed down from the north and came to a halt, with a small low developing Kent/Sussex area.

Remember Nick F stating that the Tunbridge Wells area had a very decent fall, around 6" possibly?

Lets hope some of us get lucky on this occassion.

Well it was à theory of mine yesterday. And although plenty doubt remains!,the issue cannot be ignored, Channel lps, in à degree of mergence, with convective precip, incure from east, and timing is key.if we get the 850hpa,s timely, and also east component, alignment correct, then perhaps the most significant spell of snow this season may well end up,evolve, bang over most if not all our region.mean wind speed and chill factor just aiding poss fun/ games.......

It was very heavy for a while, had half an inch in an hour from 3:30pm - 4:30pm and then mother half inch up to about 8pm. Didn't realise Sandgate had issues though! That is one of the problems of this town..it starts back on the slopes of the Downs and ends up by the sea so any heavy rain just pours down to those right on the coast.

This happened to a greater extent on March 12th 1996 when a storm gave us 125mm of rain in around four hours! Many homes and several businesses flooded in that one.

I'm guessing London is marginal again this time?

The heat island effect doesn't help for London. Just checking the 06z runs and GFS and NAVGEM push things further north again compared to the previous run, NOGAPS doesn't but, hey, that's NOGAPS and it's being dumped next week. It's the UKMO mainly that doesn't have things up through Surrey and into the London fringes, this will obviously have an effect on what people think might happen.

If I get 30cm of snow here I'll be shocked! Maybe 5cm at best :)

I think that the snow event this time just might last a bit longer than the April 2008 one. Its good to see that the METO reflect the continuing possibilities for our region through Tuesday as the low stays close enough by on the continent. I'm sure the North Sea is also coming into play by then too with convective possibilities. I might keep the tupperware, erm, on ice for a bit on that basiscold.gif
