It'll be interesting to see what maximum temperatures are tomorrow at the peak of the cold. At present the temperature at 850hPa level is -11C in these parts, but it takes time for it to become embedded. We've had a max temp of 3.7C today so far which is a bit milder than expected. The lowest maximum temperature at this site is 1.3C on 4th March 1987, so it would be notable if we can get anywhere near that.

Coldest Maxima here since 1980:

1.3C: 4th March 1987

1.8C: 12th March 1986

1.8C: 9th March 1987

1.9C 1st March 1987

1.9C: 13th March 1996

It's 0.8c here under sunshine.

March is certainly shaping up to be a below average month, the first half at least. Though it's easy to underestimate how a mild second half can skew the figures making it appear average, we seem to be saying a month of two contrasts lately, perhaps it will be the same again.

March max temperatures-

1st: 5.c

2nd: 7.c

3rd: 7.c

4th: 4.c

5th: 4.c

6th: 4.c

7th: 6.c

8th: 3.c

9th: 2.c

10th: 1.c

Forecast (BBC)

11th: -1.c

12th: 2.c

13th: 3.c

14th: 4.c

Light showers still, Not amounting to much yet. Very powdery type of snow due to very low dew points.

Temp 1.1C. Humidity 25% (Not sure if that's accurate! Seems very low). Dew point -14.9C!

Hopefully showers will pick up soon as pointed out above.

Looking at rain today,i would hazard a guess at problems with the white stuff by the morning.

I do not see the NAE picking the streamers up too well.

A raft of showers heading in off the coast entering around Scarborough/Filey,currently over York.Projected to become beefier as the afternoon progresses.

Just had our first shower of the day: it was quite light and mainly of graupel. I was cutting my hedge rofl.gif It was an excuse to be outside in the lovely dry weather!

On the NW radar there appears to be a number of showers upwind but they all appear to be fairly light, sadly.

Temp here is now 1.9°C with a DP of -4.7°C Not so sure about PM's figures for Scarborough - shome mishtake shurely....biggrin.png

With east scotland now having 5-10cm from underestimated convection i am now high optimistic for yorkshire tonight as those winds get very strong to gale force!

Showers all over on the radar but nothing actually falling at the moment.

The sun has gone in and the temp has now fallen to 2.3C with a dewpoint of -3.8C, so perhaps it wont be long.

Flurries on and off here, but the most noticable thing has been the strength and perishing nature of the wind, it feels very cold on the hill tops today, but has dried off many of the surfaces - what snow falls is now in with a better chance of sticking.

On and off snow flurries here, the flakes are 50p at times which is surprising considering the dew points.

Interestingly the radar is showing the showers intensifying as they move inland, strength of the march sun definitely having an impact.

Very low humidity today: I have recorded 56% at 14:14. Currently 59% with a DP of -5.8°C and a temp of 1.3°C. I guess this is related to the source of the air from the continent. If this is right then I suppose the humidity is even lower on the East side of the N Sea.

Just thinking out loud...

A fair number of showers about here at the moment, but so far have dodged the whole lot of them- looks like the greatest potential will be around 6pm onwards though.

1.6C here and falling, and humidity also falling, so the very cold air is clearly taking hold- this means that if I do manage to catch some of those heavier showers that are showing out in the North Sea, they should accumulate on the ground.
