Blue skies from 15 minutes ago, now that streamer on the horizon is overhead and another whiteout.

HIgh, after a lull around 4-7pm convection around the Forth is likely to peak again with a streamer developing and convection behind persisting right through into tomorrow afternoon in the southeast.

Hope your right LSS, would be nice given we have only had a proper covering once this winter and even then it was 2cm and lasted only a day. Down in Avonbridge this afternoon near Armadale and there's a few cm's here. How's things looking in your part of Fife?

A slow start with on an off slight coverings due to hail but really on with proper snow and big flakes now!

Heavy granular snow going to big flakes and now smaller flakes.

Very little melt from previous 13.00-13.30 shower as sun did not appear.

Temp. +1.0C/-0.5C and a stream of showers incoming from North Sea.

Snow cover quite quickly melting as sun been out for a while. Still good cover on grass. Seems to be quite a bit of showery activity in the North Sea though.

Have we changed air masses at all possibly? Earlier today was hazy between the showers with definition to the shower clouds. Now, it seems clearer with obvious towering shower clouds around.

I'm thinking if we had had those type of airmasses in say december/janurary minus the strong sun of march there would be virtually no snow melt (maybe very little)

Very much so, November/December 2010 had very minimal snowmelt if any here and that was with uppers varying from -8C to -12C. With -13/-14C we'd be looking at ice days even with the falling snow. Fortunately once the sun goes down the March factor goes out of the window and what snow that falls will really build up.

Worth savouring, on inspection of possible other occurences of very cold uppers this is potentially the first time we've seen -14C uppers on our shores since January 1987.

It looks like the wind has swung to more of a ENEly direction here now meaning the flow of showers will track further south and miss here. Not great for here but good news for areas further south!

A few pictures from earlier today. At around 9:30am,

And then again at around 11am after the main band of snow had moved through,

https://forum.netweather.tv/gallery/image/17747-street-1100am/

Last I measured the depth was around 8cm but we had some more snow after that so I'd say 8-10cm in total (or 3-4 inches in old money). Went for a walk with the dog around 2pm and it was 'squeaky' snow. By then the showers had largely stopped and where it was through to the tarmac it was melting, but no obvous melt on the grassy areas and still clinging onto the trees.

For the 12hr period from midnight when we went to bed and there was barely a dusting, and midday when the main band of showers stopped, I'd say it was well up there with the best accumulation of the winter. We've done not too bad for snow this winter either so for a March snowfall to rank amongst the best is doing well. We've had deeper overall, and I doubt this'll last 2 weeks on the ground that other snowfalls have lasted, but it's a nice extra bonus.

Snow showers now appearing in my neck of the woods driven along by a stiff east wind.....had been quite light but heavier now.

Current temp 1.7c/-1.2cpost-18260-0-03395500-1362931608_thumb.jpost-18260-0-56342600-1362931611_thumb.j

mmm.. Nothing prolonged showing on the radar just now. Presumably with convection, showers will just magically appear, rather than be tracked from the north sea - are we downing tools unti tonight?

Very frustrating here so far. Great to finally have proper cold in place from the east but aside from one moderate shower at 8am which left a temporary slight covering it's been largely dry with just a few light flurries.

Melt between showers has all but removed the snaw. Have a thin strip of white by the play house.
