Heavy hail showers here now. The sky is dark and heavy but sunshine to the west. It has been great to see the fast moving billowing clouds today against a blue sky.

So I managed to hear 2 rumbles of thunder and saw the dark threatening sky light up before me. Got soaked in the process but well worth it. Bring on the storm season!

EDIT: Thought I'd add a photo I took just before the rain started. Nothing special however I was hoping to spot a funnel.

Some decent hail sessions have the roads around here like skating rinks, after their deluge.

Temperature has dropped 3C in this session, as the ice warning came on in the car.

Add some sleet in that mix....

Beautiful radar this evening with the LOW centre over the region and stunning CBs in all directions as well as Mammatus

reflecting brightly as the sun sets.

I've been so wrapped up in the hunt for cold in the model thread that today's convection has took me a little by surprise, Wind, hail, and lightning, what more could you ask for biggrin.png

Looks to be a developing stream of small cells to the south of Bristol, giving frequent outbreaks of very heavy rain.

Some surface water present on the roads etc now.

Either there's something wrong with the radar or the precip is evaporating before it hits the surface (which i doubt) there's no rain at all here ..

Just posted this in the SE thread, but as it's about my visit home today, thought you might like it here also:)

Well, totally treacherous driving conditions coming back tonight over the A303. Steady to heavy rain across Salisbury Plain with plenty of standing water; gritters were out although temp was 4C. Came along just after a bad accident with 4 cars strewn across the carriageway and a poor guy desperately trying to stop drivers ploughing into the two cars wedged against the hard shoulder in the rain; an absolute obstacle course of cars and debris to navigate.

On the brighter side, we walked through Midsomer Norton in the most amazing hail storm ever; pea sized balls of hail came thick out of the sky, covering the ground in minutes so the main road was deep in hail, and the cars needed headlights and advanced anti-skid driving skills. My son held out for five minutes enjoying the feel of the hail on his head, but in the end the stinging got too much and he took shelter under the umbrella which had the hail thundering onto it. FAB! Also some lovely sheet lightning across the sky driving over Salisbury Plain which lit up everything in purples, oranges and whites; looked gorgeous.

Yep, I'd go along with that.

We had the lot earlier; thunder/lightning/wind/hail/rain for a couple of hours but missed it all as I was transfixed by the rugby.

Any other day, I'd have been out there in my pants in full Lord of the Flies mode, but it was a good game,so I regret nothing.

    There's always tomorrow...

    • Wet March so far with more rain for the rest of the month, but hints of more settled weather early April

It's been a wet March for much of the UK, with well above average rainfall, though the Northern & Western Isles have been drier than average. Despite a colder drier respite on Monday, staying generally unsettled to see out the rest of the month. But hints of some drier weather in early April. Read the full update here
