Based on the 1981 to 2010 average of 8.5c I am going to go for slightly below average

My prediction is 8.2c

I'd love to be proved wrong and we get above average now I've gone for a slightly below average month

April is our most fickle month, it can bring summer warmth and winter cold and sometimes both in the space of a few days. However, the vast majority of April's since 1989 have been average or mild and we have experienced the two warmest April's on record in the space of 6 years in 2007 and 2011, we are due a cold one...

I'll play is safe and go slightly below average at 7.7 degrees. I think the first 10 days or so will be cold, with low nightime minima with strong northern heights. The general theme of the month will be for a gradual warm up with perhaps a shortlived 'warmish' spell during the second half of the month. It is certainly not going to be a April 07 or 11, but neither the rainfest that was April 12.

Looking back at the CET series, 1986 was a notably cold April - anyone remember much about that month, I think it had very similiar synoptics to what we have now i.e. a robust high over greenland stretching into scandi coming on the back of the freezing Feb and cold March - the cold pool was particularly intense for the time of year - again similiar to now. Indeed April 1986 was colder than a number of winter months during the 1988-2008 period.

I'm still marvelling over this month, beating all the winter months just gone despite notable cold in each of them - it has been a very special month.

I always think it look silly to go for a cold month following a cold month as it looks like short term thinking rather than big picture and it puts me in the 'cluster' of others which suggests i am just going with the consensus...however I am guessing 7.5

The 06z GFS would have the CET on about 2.5C by the 5th. So even if that turned out correct, we'd need the remaining 25 days to average 9.8C to reach the 1981-2010 average of 8.6C
