Thrilled to reveal that my wife gave birth to our baby Noah yesterday morning at dawn; considering my loathing for anything flood related a slightly ironic name :)

Hopefully his arrival is greeted with some Spring warmth!

Strewth....look at that lot incoming. That should dampen down the 'events' in Trafalgar Square this evening, and the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley !!

Edit: Congrats to Jezzer, wife and new born.

After a beautiful morning here and the temperature reaching 13.8°c, it has now dropped to 11.4°c and feeling much cooler.

Looks as though the rain is about 20 miles to our south west at the mo'.

Been raining since about 1pm in Brighton, really windy as well, an amazing contrast to first thing today.  Hopefully it will pass through overnight - the flat's windows are rattling in the stronger gusts which makes for an atmospheric if noisy night (haven't had one of those for some time!)

Question for JP. We all await your fax charts but I just wondered how long it takes you to make these forecasts using tonight's at 10.37pm as an example?

hi terryall

good question

it varies depending on what is expected

rain forecasts are easier than snow

probably about an hour roughly but longer with snow ones

hi jezzer

Talking of fog, as RP was, here in Brighton we seem to have been plunged into a Dickensian netherworld of rolling fog and rain.  There are streetlamps along the seafront that on a clear night look like beautiful beacons, but when the sea fog rolls in and all you can see is the shrouded light from their bulbs they create a feel of Victorian gloom, a slightly sinister ambience where the expectation is of blackened carriages drawn by horses, top-hatted men in long coats, graverobbers and urchins (sea urchins here) offering to 'mind your penny farthing for half a crown, guv?'

I am slightly regretting creating that iimage given I have to take out the dog soon and walk him through the tunnel down towards the sea, opening the cast iron gates with a proper old haunted house style key.  If I run into a phantom I will probably try pulling off its mask and then suggesting to it that, were it not for those meddling kids, it would probably have got away with it.

Thanks JP, if it's night time only I can cope with that, but wouldn't want to start wearing the thermals again.

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
