Bright start but horrible out there now, with a gusty south-westerly wind and intermittent squally showers. Currently dry and 13c but feeling colder in this wind!

There is no doubt that it is going to be very windy and with gales around western and south westernmost coasts especially, but reading the regional forecast here from the METO the talk of severe gales around the south and south east coast looks exaggerated to me. These look only likely in small pockets in the channel itself

    13050921_0906.gif

The windspeed gusts indicated on their website always seem to be overdone to the reality. On this occasion I'm struggling to see 60mph + gusts materialising away from those western coasts.

The METO advisory area looks too large for windspeeds

None of the models suggest much more than a strong to gale force wind with gusts maybe towards 50mph, and whilst this is blustery, it is hardly disruptive, and the descriptions of 'squally' winds and possibly thundery showers looks OTT when the models suggest that rainfall further east and south east actually looks relatively patchy with only a short period of heavier rain giving less than 5mm in most places
