    14th May 1992 and 14th May 1993 were two contrasting days for parts of Scotland and the far north of England. In 1992, it was a scorcher whilst in 1993 it was a frigid washout even snowy in places.

    Some places, 14th May 1992 was the hottest day of the year, whilst 14th May 1993 was the coldest May Day for years.

    The difference was all due to wind direction and airmass type. In 1992, it was a hot tropical southerly, in 1993, it was an Arctic east to northeasterly
