There was lightning detected from this earlier just a few miles NW of York. Could still produce the odd Sferic . A couple of cells SW of Newcastle are intensifying but no sparks detected as yet.

Redcar and Cleveland is under a yellow warning for strong winds all other parts of the NE are not under any warnings

Issued at: 1134 on Wed 9 Oct 2013

Valid from: 0005 on Thu 10 Oct 2013

Valid to: 2359 on Thu 10 Oct 2013

Gale force northerly winds will develop in coastal areas of Eastern England overnight, with the likelihood of 50 to 60 mph gusts in places during Thursday. The public should be aware of the potential for minor coastal disruption, primarily due to large waves, such as overtopping of sea walls, and perhaps some flooding of coastal roads.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

An area of low pressure will pass close to northern Scotland today, moving southeast into the North Sea on Thursday. This will cause gale force winds to spread along eastern coasts, along with some large waves and surge. Whilst gusts of 50 to 60 mph are unlikely to cause disruption due to wind damage, the associated large waves and surge may well cause some minor flooding impacts in parts of coastal Eastern England. Winds will begin to ease from the north of this warning area later tomorrow.

Quite a few torrential downpours here today with even some hail mixed in.

Looks like another batch heading our way in off the North Sea.

Up-to September 30th Darlington is pretty much bang on the 81 to 10 average for rainfall

406mm for the year so far (up-to 30th September)

1981 to 2010 average is 408mm

How much rain we get over the next 2 weeks or so remains to be seen as with a lot of south westerlies it all depends on how much energy there is left in any rain once it gets this side of the pennines

So far we are 28m short of the 81 to 10 average for rain in October have a feeling we'll be quite a good bit above average this month

Indeed; looks like it will be very short-lived though, next week looks very mild. Oct temp doesn't affect following winter usually though, Oct snow cover and ice area/extent much more important, so I'm enjoying the warmth, but it's bloody boring with no frosts or storms.

The change to milder weather is also underway now in the south west where the sky has cleared and the sun is shining with it temperatures are in the high teens down there the change to milder weather will get to all of the England, wales and Ireland once this rain clears through. Tomorrow looks a lot brighter and also milder

The main band of rain has now cleared only give around 3 hours of rain

Another 10mm from it here though - getting quite wet now - only need another 7mm to reach the monthly average.
