It's not doing much here now, apart from a bit of moderate rain. A lot of the bright echo's have depleted on the radar now, it doesn't look as menacing. Heads up for Devon/Cornwall later.

But will it make it over the South Downs which have a reputation of killing thunderstorms

Those of us, like myself, who are still learning how to read the Skew-T charts correctly, here is a very good guide, courtesy of Matt Hugo;

http://matthugo.wordpress.com/2013/06/07/loaded-gun-atmospheric-sounding/

AWD That is a simple way to read a Skew-t But for us we need to Modify the Skew-T to get a reading for the T & Td for the time of day we are interested in. John Holms did write a tutorial on here some years ago that explains how to do it. Do a search for Skew-T and you should find it.

Storm & Convective Forecast - Issued 2013-06-07 09:44:25

Valid: 07/2013 0600z to 08/2013 0600z
Headline: ... THERE IS RISK OF THUNDERSTORMS OVER S ENGLAND FORECAST ...

post-1052-0-55202000-1370598897_thumb.jp

An upper low will remain over Portugal today with surface low-pressure over Iberia and W France. A slack warm moist southeasterly flow at mid-levels will advect across the UK, unstable across S England, with an east or northeast flow at the surface.

... S ENGLAND and S WALES ...

Destabilisation of relatively warm and moist flow aloft from the southeast (wet bulb potential temps of 12C between 700 and 500 hPa) has taken place since the early hours across S England, with cluster of mid-level convective cells producing heavy downpours with thunder & lightning across Sussex, Hants and Dorset this morning. These heavy showers and thunderstorms will continue spread/develop northwest across central southern and southwest England through the rest of the day, as warm/moist layers continue to destabilise - aided by a subtle mid-level shortwave trough noted on recent WV imagery drifitng W/NW. Convection will be generally high-based above a stable 'boundary layer', so no severe weather is anticipated, however - there is a risk of locally torrential downpours leading to localised flooding, strong outflow winds, CG lightning and hail.

Will be interesting to see how (if at all) much thundery activity is associated with these later. If it looks promising I might have to jump in the car and head down the M5 after work.
