hi,

Yes, will get back later. Just back from a few days in soggy Sussex. Had a good week in Saalbach this time last year, but was bloody cold. Enjoyed my time there, especially at Bobbys Bar !

Hi Carinthian, can you provide any insight on the expected weather conditions in Austria next week?  Is the Snow Computer suggesting that things might start to improve any time soon?  I understand that skiing is still good on piste but not much in the way to of off piste, I'm out in Saalbach on the 25th Jan for week with mates, some of whom haven't been to Austria before and I hope that they could experience it in its full glory.

I understand that I should be looking to the North/North West when looking for the next (first in some time) dump - is that correct?

Cheers!

Blondends,

Our snow computer operates better in the shorter time scale, so 25th a bit too far for individual resort mountain ranges. Normally the mountains around Kitzbuhel, Zell/Zee including Saalbach do hold the snow and indeed well known for its own snow feed micro climate . Of course during poor conditions as of recent weeks these resorts are at risk of poor piste conditions because they are relatively low compared to some of the higher resorts .A colder week next week with light snowfalls forecast should help. Beyond that is too far at the moment. The Saalbach/ Hinterglemm web site offers a great service regarding conditions and would have access to snow predictions before you go away. Enjoy the resort and do not forget to give Bobbys Bar a visit, good cheap mountain fodder.

Bobby's Bar is brilliant, I have fuzzy memories of a karaoke night in there a couple of years ago.  Saalbach is excellent, great skiing, great apres and great prices!

We are going out to ellmau on the 26th jan. Massively keeping my fingers crossed as the rest of this week and into the weekend looking like being quite mild again to my untrained eye.

Is it looking like a cool down next week again carinthian? Doesn't look like anything really cold in the next 2 weeks to me?

Hair dryer conditions in Salzburg this afternoon. Fohn in operation and 15C. All the moisture being deposit on the mountains to the south of the city. Check out latest satellite photos, you will see the great divide.

Hi there,

Hair dryer conditions in the Tirol and Salburgerland at the moment with a lot of melt below 1200m. Luckily by this time next week, colder air mass should be in place and hopefully a return to normal snow conditions.  Enjoy your time in Ellmau, you will be ok .

Hi again C, any insight in to the potential snow forecast this week in to the weekend?  Saalbach forecasts seem to suggest that there is potential for Sunday, with light snow tomorrow.  It really is a dire situation in that region, apparently it's mostly man made snow left Posted Image

Hi John,

Thought you might like this view from the bedroom. Winter Wonderland out there. Yes, we have been lucky this season with a lot of snowfall in our particular part of the Alps. You lot just keep sending in copious amounts of moisture and seems to  hold and spiral in the Southern Alps.

How is the forecast looking further North around Innsbruck?  Seems like that area has just missed out on all the fun being just too far North and West.

Good Morning, fantastic ski-ing conditions this week. This picture was taken yesterday at the highest point of the Katschberg, 2200m. The restaurant is covered in 300cm of snow. The view south looks towards the Hohe Tauren National Park, with the Gross Glockner peak in the far background. This part of Austria has recorded the highest snowfall since 1975 and parts of the South Tirol have presently 450 cm at 2500m. Just amazing past few weeks of ski-ing on pristine runs. All visitors to the resort have just been blown away with the amount of snow coupled with blue skies and pleasant spring sunshine. Just perfect.

Guten Morgan vom Katschberg. Perfect conditions. This view is my favourite, looking over the Gontal Valley towards the Kareck Mountain ( 2500m )Great place for off eco ski-ing and summer mountain hikes. There is also a welcome pub at the end of the valley only accessible by walking, ski-ing off piste or horseback.

35cm of new snow in the village today. Temperatures now well below freezing. At least a further 15cm expected tonight . Snow level could go down to 500m in the west. Some great powder conditions expected over the next few days, although avalance risk increases with the new snow likely to become unstable over the crust caused by melting under the strong sunshine of last week.

Could well record 370cm snow depth by tomorrow on the top of the Katschberg, higher than recorded in 1975, the previous highest measured snowfall in these parts.
