Some shots today outside the local village pub buried in snow. The clearing of snow of the path to the entrance door takes priority !

Sorry to spoil the snow party, but the situation for a while at lower elevations in Austria must be appalling...( an unprecedented lack of snow? ).

From the second warmest winter on record... to a running temperature mean of 2.6C above average so far for 2014!! Heck...any reported disturbances to natures balance reported?

Hello Styx,

Nice of you to post from Hobart. The party has not been spoilt in our part of the world, although we live 1 mile up in the atmosphere. By a strange quirk of the meteorological winter cycle, parts of the Southern Alps of Austria, The EastTirol and the Dolomites have had the best snow conditions since 1978. Of course most of the lower Alpine regions have been fairly snow less this winter as has much of Europe and temperatures well above the normal. For some reason a stubborn low circulation was born out of this very mild winter and centred over the Southern Alps. The huge amount of moisture and super cooling produced record snowfall at elevation in a very localised region. For example, some resorts in the East Tirol and Carinthia recorded 350cm of snow but resorts less than 50 km  away in the Tirol and Salzburgerland were making do with the minimum about of snowfall.

I for one have just been blown away with the amount of snowfall, more than I have ever seen !

Yes, the pictures you have posted in recent months have been quite dramatic, but I wonder whether you must be getting to the point of being fed up with the constant white vista?! The Alps do look beautiful during the warmer months with a big spectrum of deep colour. It would be my yearning to see the snow melt away if I was living in that environment at the moment. I have relatives in St.Gallen, and spent many months in Switzerland. The nostalgia of Alpine living is very strong.

Heavy snow cover in Tasmania's high country ( 1000-1700m ) used to be a typical winter/spring affair, drifts of many metres, but in recent decades, it's been astonishingly quiet.

The snow is now turning slushy and will will now be glad to see it go in the village. The summer season is quite spectacular as well and paints a dramatic change from the winter wonderland picture. Green cow pastures and woodlands, crystal clear lakes and snow capped glacier peaks and all usually under warm sunshine and blue skies. The hiking season beckons in a months time. Now is the time to return to blighty for a while and catch up on cricket and drink real ale !

Saw some pictures of your high country in deep snow fall from winters in the far past memory, very similar to ones I witness as a youngster in the High Peak of Cheshire/ Derbyshire in the 60s with 30 foot drifts !

Well thats it. All over for another season. The resort is officially closed until the summer season starts. All the quests have deserted and the snow line recedes further up the mountain. Time for all the workers and business owners to take well deserved break. Blighty calls for me with a bit of cricket and real ale.

Been back in Sussex for a couple of weeks and had to put the heating on and already fed up with the battering from coastal winds and storms.

Watching cricket in Hove has not been very inviting yet, although Friday looks a better bet. Still the beer is good.

Super Saturday morning in Katschberg. That's the view to the local mountain Kareck, still with snow patches on Northern slope 2400m. Plenty walking up there today with a fantastic view of the surrounding Hohe Tauren National Park and glaciers.post-3489-0-87437400-1405759135_thumb.jp

A massive cb anvil head looking SW towards Gross Glockner direction. Think there will be a substantial thunderstorm affecting the border country presently. Our stormy summer continues.

Hi all, the close season starts on Monday and count down towards the first snowfalls. Picturepost-3489-0-49190100-1409389319_thumb.jp of the great snowfall of last February on Katschberg mountain, the heaviest since 1975.

Morning all, good start to the Autumn with snow falling above the village and settling at 2100m. Also snow settling on the Alpine pass up to Gross Glockner. Wood chopping season starts today, a good day to start. Hope to get as much snow last year in these parts.post-3489-0-07737500-1409566791_thumb.jp

Not a nice day, cold damp and cloudy with snow level at 2300m. Hope to visit the Pasterze Glacier with some Alpine Club members soon before the seasonal snow cover takes over.

Hi, got another one here from last February . One of my favourite watering holes, The Gamskogel Pub located on the blue run into Katschberg and sits at 1800m. One of the best haute cusine/ski fodder stops in the whole of the Alps.Massive flood lit toboggan run from here with a 250 m drop !

Smell of Autumn in the air and log chopping season starts in the pasture meadows. Some snow beginning to show on the higher peaks above 2500m.

The latest measurements of glaciers in The Hohe Tauren show a slow down in loss of ice compared to the previous 2 summers. However, the long term decline continues. The biggest glacier in Austria is located on Gross Glockner  and has this summer recorded a loss in the lower range of 7.5 m in thickness with retreat continuing at its current progress. Several smaller glaciesr at higher elevation have shown a small increase in thickness, this due to the heavy snowfalls last winter in the location and relatively cool summer with cloud cover and have this Autumn showed a slight advancement compared to 2 years ago. The Pasterze glacier will continue with its retreat and loss in thickness for several more years until it reaches the elevation of the small glaciesr, whence mass of snow and ice should hopefully start to grow again.
