At last, after many years of denial, rumour, counter rumour and half-truth, an admission from the US Government - Area 51 does exist!

Area 51 is out there: US government admits existence of airbase shrouded in mystery

The mysterious piece of land in Nevada has been linked with reports of UFOs, alien bodies and secret government projects

The CIA has for the first time has acknowledged the existence of Area 51 - the enigmatic US airbase shrouded in mystery and a staple of alien cover-up conspiracy theories. The mysterious piece of land in Nevada has been linked with reports of UFOs, alien bodies and secret government projects.

A declassified report, made public this week, makes numerous references to the United States' most controversial and discussed air base in a CIA history of the U-2 spy plane programme. The documents came to light during research by the National Security Archive (NSA) at George Washington University for a report into the development, history and operation of U-2 spy planes during the Cold War.

As part of the research the NSA obtained declassified documents that for the first time actually reference Area 51. Included among the documentation, obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request made in 2005, there is also a map of the secret base. Included among the documentation is also a map of the secret base. Included among the documentation is also a map of the secret base.

"President Eisenhower also approved the addition of this strip of wasteland, known by its map designation as Area 51, to the Nevada Test Site," the history reads. "The outlines of Area 51 are shown on current unclassified maps as a small rectangular area adjoining the northeast corner of the much larger Nevada Test Site. To make the new facility in the middle of nowhere sound more attractive to his workers, Kelly Johnson called it the Paradise Ranch, which was soon shortened to the Ranch."

Much of the information contained in the new release of information was already known to Area 51 aficionados, but the fact that the air base is mentioned in a publicly available document is nevertheless considered notable. A public records request initially yielded documents, reviewed by National Security Archive senior fellow Jeffrey Richelson in 2002, but all mentions of Area 51 had been redacted. Mr Richelson says he requested the history again in 2005 and received a version a few weeks ago with mentions of Area 51 restored.

Officials have already acknowledged in passing the existence of the facility in central Nevada where the government is believed to test intelligence tools and weapons. Mr Richelson believes the new document shows the CIA is becoming less secretive about Area 51's existence, if not about what goes on there. "It marks an end of official secrecy about the facts of Area 51," Mr Richelson told The Las Vegas Sun. "It opens up the possibility that future accounts of this and other aerial projects will be less redacted, more fully explained in terms of their presence in Area 51."

One of the reasons Groom Lake has been officially denied is due to company compensation claims, where workers back in the skunk-work days of Area 51 became exposed to chemicals of which no known effects had been tested or trialled. Respitory diseases and the usual heart-attacks/strokes were the order of the day and a price the USAF personnel paid to get black-op technology up into the skies.

I would expect that in 2013 these stealth craft have been replaced by ionised UAV vechicles built predominantly of a carbon-fibre shell meaning the vechicles can outperform anything thrown at it, as the +/- effects of gravity are negligable. The ionisation being extracted from the atmosphere to provide enhanced lift and speed capability.

    • Exceptional warmth for western Europe as October begins

There'll be exceptionally warm temperatures for the time of year affecting much of western Europe during the coming days, but that warmth will only graze the UK for now. Next weekend may see a more direct hit with the potential for southerly winds to draw some of that heat north and take temperatures into the mid or high-twenties. Read the full update here
