I was interested to read Sept 2006 was the warmest on record. It is not a month I remember much about as I was not as interested in the weather back then. Does anyone have any memories or facts of it they would be willing to share?

What would make you happy for Sept 2013 realistically. More high pressure and warm weather in the low 20s / high teens? Or something more fresh?

If you could relive a September's weather from your past, which would it be?

2006 was an excellent September, warm and sunny right through till about the 25th, felt like summer was back after a very disappointing August.

2003 and 1999 were also decent, the latter started warm and finished thundery. There was a run of rubbish Septembers from 1992-1995, in contrast to the often memorable Octobers and Novembers of that era.

September 1919 though- what a month that sounds like!

Lots of fresh, sunny days, some from the south-west and warm, with calm evenings, and some from the north-west with cold, refreshing evenings with some frosts. And then a storm at the end of it.

For me September 2006, 2010 and 2011 are among the best - the first one didn't really feature any cool weather but plenty of showery days and frequency of thunder, particularly towards the end. Equally, 2010 and 2011 were very varied with a particularly good thunderstorm on 23/09/10 and the surreal heatwave at the end of 2011.

Septembers like 2009 and 2007, however pleasant they were, stand out as being snoozefests for me.

First part of 2001 was scorching, I remember it clearly. Other than that, 2006 was noteworthy as well as 2010 and 2011.

I don't recall any hot spells during September 2001. If I remember rightly no maxima of 25C or above was recorded that month.

2006 was definitely the best September I can remember. 27c for several days I remember and the whole month was lovely & warm as September should be.

Do hope we can pull something warm and especially sunny this month - after the very short growth season because of the cold spring certainly my plants could do with a good few more weeks yet to ripen!

If we could pull a summer equiv of what winter did to March then that'd be grand!

Regardless of how mild or cool the rest of the year has been I always wish for a cool fresh September with cool zonality sunshine and showers days like 2012 or southerly tracking lows like Septembers 1992, 1993 and 1994 when its unsettled.  When its settled I wish for a cool dry sunny and even frosty September like 1986 with its clean light northerly winds and cool high pressure systems.

1994 - I was coming up to ten at the time, and my youngest sister had been born. Was a warm month and I remember playing out after school in the warm autumnal sun.

2005 - Very warm as I recall. Can remember my first ex turning 21 and travelling to Brum from Cov in boiling temperatures.

2006 - I remember it being very warm and an extension of the very hot summer we had. It was about 22/23c when my nephew was born!

2011 - It was decent. Even better than the August!

Worst was 2008 - VERY wet and by the end of the month it started to turn cold.

I think September 2003 gets the nod from me- warm, sunny, but also pretty varied, with some unusually cool nights in the last week.  September 1999 isn't far behind, for I enjoyed the warm sunny first half and the frequent showers and thunderstorms in the second half.  September 2005 was another close contender.  I don't remember a lot of notable weather in September 2006 other than some thunderstorms shortly before midmonth and a very warm, sunny day on the 23rd- for the most part the warmth that month was consistent rather than outstanding.

September 1996 was let down by my location at the time- in Tyneside the frequent easterly winds during that month brought a lot of stratocumulus in off the North Sea, and while most central and western parts of the UK had a sunny month, it was cloudy near the east coast.

If I had to choose a historic September to experience, though, 1919 would certainly be the one.

September is usually the most benign month of the year i.e. even temps in the high 20's never feel as warm as such days during May-August. Whilst it can be a wet month, it is rarely a dull one and it is rare to see a September go by without a spell of sunny very pleasant dry weather - such conditions most likely in the first third of the month, which is often a very dry period.

Sept 1986 was the last particularly very cool one, indeed I think Sept 86 was the last time we saw a September 1.5 degree below the normal.. I stand to be corrected.

Sept 1995 was particularly wet and unsettled coming on the back of the exceptionally warm dry sunny August - a major contrast.

We saw a run of cool wet Septembers between 1992 and 1994.

Sept 96 saw alot of dry sunny warm weather. Bit of a void when it comes to 97, 98,99,00 - however I do remember a warm spell in 99.

Sept 2001 saw plenty of dry sunny warm weather. Sept 02 saw a very sunny dry warm week at the end. Sept 03 and 04 can't remember much.

Sept 05 and 06 very dry and warm and sunny - exceptionally so in 2006 an extension of summer.

Since 2006 we have seen varied Septembers with alot of very dry weather non-descript conditions.

1998 was pretty good, there was a nice spell mid-month- I think some places had their warmest day of the year then. 2000 was wet overall but I do remember it having a half-decent few days again in midmonth. Nowhere near as wet as the Oct or Nov that year though. 1999 was memorable as I said before.

Now September 1997- there is one month I honestly can't remember a single thing about, weatherwise. August and October 1997 certainly, October had the coldest night of the 97/8 "winter"! Even November sticks in my mind for being a very tedious southwesterly month devoid of any cold or prolonged sunshine. But September anyone????

Sept 2001 saw plenty of dry sunny warm weather.  .

Interesting you say this because the figures don't seem to bear those facts. For instance, Manchester airport only got above 20C twice that month and that was at the end of the month. There were some pretty cool days, there were 7 days when the maxima never got above 15C.The 13th was a really cool dayhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dq3cw0jZdFE

    2006 for certain

2011 although not spectacular it made up for what was the 5th successive wash-out summer with a hot end UK wide falling just short of 30c in the south

Septembers 1998 and 2000 both had a couple of notable warm sunny interludes, but ended up cloudy and wet overall in most parts of the country.  However if I remember correctly September 1998 had a marked west-east split for sunshine, with much below average totals in the east but slightly above average in many parts of the west.  In September 2000 above average sunshine was largely confined to north-west Scotland.

September 2001 also had a west-east split, but cloudy conditions and suppressed daytime maxima covered most of the country, including places as far west as Manchester where Ringway reported only 95 hours of sunshine. However, Damianslaw's recollections of warm dry sunny weather might not necessarily be incorrect because west Cumbria and south-west Scotland were relatively sunny at times with warm days and chilly nights.

September 2002 was a west-east split month more widely associated with warm dry sunny weather.  All regions were warm and dry, and Morecambe had 153% of the normal sunshine, but northerlies on the eastern flank of high pressure in the second half of the month resulted in slightly below average sunshine totals in many counties bordering the North Sea.

I got mixed up between Sept 2001 and October 2001 - I was away for much of Sept 2001, but Oct 2001 saw alot of dry sunny warm weather for the time of year.

I remember Sept 08 saw a decent spell mid month.

Someone mentioned Sept 97, I recall the latter part of the month was quite good weatherwise at least in NE England.

It has to be said though of all the months of the year, September is often the least memorable on account of it being the month least likely to see extreme weather events.
