    September 2013 at Lampeter, Ceredigion

    Very average

Averaged out September was an average kind of month with no extremes at all. Rainfall was a little below average while temperatures were about average. However, both the first few days and last 10 saw plenty of dry and warm weather, with all but a fraction of a millimetre of the total rain falling in the fortnight from 6th to 19th. There was just the sole grass frost, only one day had hail, no gales nor thunder and limited fog.

1st – 5th: Dry and quite warm with sunny spells, the month's highest reading of 23.7c was on 4th

6th – 20th: Unsettled and mostly cool with rain at times. Heavy rain overnight 8th gave 29mm, easily the wettest day of the month. At times it was very cool, notably on the 18th which was the coolest day of the month with a max of just 13.2c, although it failed to reach 15c on 4 other days. A rather poor spell for sunshine with no day exceeding an estimated 6 hours. The first ground frost of Autumn occurred on the night of 15th down to 1c.

21st - 30th: Mostly dry and generally warm, some sunny intervals. High pressure close to the UK with 3 days of 21st to 24th exceeding 22c, very warm for late September, the highest being 23.6c 23rd (Trawsgoed reached 25c). The only cool day was the high of 15.6c 26th an overcast day as a weak cold front temporarily cooled things. The mildest nights of the month occurred during this spell, both 22nd and 23rd having minima of 15.1c. Even without the direct influence of high pressure after 24th it remained mainly dry to the month end

Says it all really, a very mild first third, a cold middle third, and a pretty average final third contribute to a very average month. Minima around average and maxima slightly below.

HOBART ( pop 215,000 ) is Tasmania's capital, situated at sealevel at the base of Mt Wellington ( 1270m ). Climate is temperate with a strong maritime influence.

September - First month of Spring

Exceptionally mild with only a brief cold spell. This is the 23rd month in a row warmer than average ( mean 1981-2010 comparision ).

Fine and mild well into the start of the month before a cold SW change took effect 11-13th. Despite producing little rain it was cold enough for a dusting of snow to low levels - settling near 250m locally and near sealevel on the coast to the south of Hobart where showers were more persistent. Not enough to cause disruption. High pressure followed thru giving Hobart a temperature that has not been lower for Spring since 1959... but clear skies were not to last as a humid rain depression developed over the southeast mainland, eventually tracking down Tasmania's east coast to produce a day of steady light rain ( 13mm ), amongst a string of days that were cool with low cloud and scattered showers with winds onshore. The remaining third of the month was cool to mild with a mix of sun and cloud,  with winds zonal W-NW, with occasional fronts bringing occasional showers.

    Average maximum:  16.7 ( +1.3 )

    Average minimum:  8.2 ( +1.3 )

    Rainfall:  40mm ( average 53mm )

    Rain days ( +1mm ):  9/from 17

Extremes in daily temperature for September ( Records since 1882 ):

    Highest maximum:  23.4 ( Record 31.0 in 1987 )

    Lowest maximum:  10.1 ( Record 6.1 in 1885 )

    Highest minimum:  12.7 ( Record 18.0 in 1973 )

    Lowest minimum:  0.6 ( Record -0.8 in 1897 )

A rather average month with regards to the mean temperature and sunshine levels, but still it was the third coolest since 1997. It joined 2009, 2011 and 2012 in being much drier than average and became the third consecutive month with less than 30mm of rainfall.

The first week was very warm and dry with long spells of sunshine. Every day from the 2nd-5th surpassed 23°C and night minima were well above average. It then turned cooler and wetter in the second week. The 10th was particularly cool for so early in the month with the max temp for the day of 12.9°C being set just before 11pm. The rather cool weather then really set in during the middle part of the month. The 14th-17th all had maxima below 15°C and skies frequently cleared overnight leading to several single figure minima.

The final third of the month was then much more settled with temperatures quite pleasant. The 22nd and 23rd were very good days with max temps above 21°C and plenty of sunshine. This theme continued into the final few days, though easterly winds meant temperatures were closer to average. After the wetter spell mid-month there was no measurable rain after the 20th.

Overall a rather dry but benign and generally pleasant month.
