The non-England UK countries really struggle for some reason, Wales lower than Norway and N Ireland barely higher than Iceland. The record for Alaska is 37.8 to give some idea how badly the UK fares, except for SE England.

It is the fact that we are surrounded by water and at quite a high latitude that keeps us cooler than those on the continent.

 

Wales is very coastal and mountainous so would always struggle to see high maximums. The highest recorded temperature recorded is in the NE of the country (near to where I am originally from).

Your Austria figure (at least) is out of date.

 

Your headline is somewhat misleading given your own figures (and method of arriving at that conclusion).

 

On your own figures, there are nine countries (out of a possible 37) that fail to beat the UK's highest temperature ever.  There are a further 3 countries that are less than 0.5C higher.

 

I would have thought that average overall temps in summer would be a better way to support the point, but it still doesn't work because you surely have Iceland and Ireland lagging behind and I strongly suspect some Scandanavian and Baltic countries too.

 

So, unfortunately (or should I say fortunately) this thread title is simply wrong!

surprised at a few of these, especially the iceland one . what were the synoptics to record that?scandinavian countries getting that high too came as a surprise. would of thought Malta would have been higher though, does being a small island keep it cooler relative to inland countries on the same latitude?

Thank god, the heat mentioned above just makes life hell. How could anyone physically want to spend the day and then night awake, not being able to move through sweat and over heating? I'd rather it be -30 than +30 - purely on the basis that it's a lot easier to be warm up when your cold than it is cool down when your hot.

Also some of these numbers for countries may be incorrect depending on the dates...because borders have change over the last century numerous times..for example Poland and Germany record high are eaxactly the same..it could be that this value is for the same place that once was part of Germany and now is in Poland.

it says day time highs not night time highs,you may think different when you have spent over 40 years working outside and your hands ,ears,nose and toes give a constant battle to keep warm !

Certainly, on average, the UK does have some of the coolest summers in Europe. Ireland is slightly cooler and only really Iceland has appreciably cooler summers than us. It's no coincidence the coolest summer temperatures are found on the Islands off the northwest of the continent, jutting out into the North Atlantic.

Even much of Scandi can be surprisingly warm in summer, even up north.

The Atlantic heavily moderates our climate all year round so we rarely see the extremes of hot or cold that is seen further to our east, basically the further away you are from the Atlantic in Europe the more extreme your temperatures usually are.

You're right about the Polish figure - 40.2C recorded at Prószków in western Poland on 29th July 1921, which at the time was the town of Proskau in eastern Germany.

 

In Germany itself however, 40.2C has been recorded no less than four times - once in July 1983, twice in August 2003 and again in July this year. It's just one of those statistical quirks, like the fact the UK's record minimum of -27.2C has been recorded on three separate occasions (and across three different months).
