Monday's storm - into Europe.

Blue sky and sunshine here now, after a rather windy night but nothing incredible really. But then last year I was in Mexico for a proper storm so everything since then seems very ordinary

Well as expected we've had nothing but rain up here!

Was crazy here. Never seen anything like it. The weird thing is that the worst of the damage in my garden seems to have been caused by winds blowing from an easterly direction- the heaviest things, like the 87kg bbq (r.i.p), were tossed due west! I also can't get over the big changes in pressure as the strongest winds hit. I was too busy freaking out slightly to look at my barometer for the couple of minutes the winds were their most ridiculous, but straight after the pressure was about 977 and then had risen to 982 within 15 mins or so. If only my anemometer hadn't been blown away I imagine I would have got some amazing gust readings! 2 trees down on my road.

Certainly a southern event to say the least. Spoken to one of the lads in London this morning E15 and said there is trees down nearly every street near him across the roads, so I can only imagine the havoc for traffic this morning down there !

 

Oop Norf, we have nothing but a light breeze you would exepct in Summer, albeit it's quite wet.

 

All eye's for this weekends storm !

 

P.S - Spare a thought for the poor boy and his family who has been presumed drowned last night :-(

DrIven into Southampton from Farnham in record time today - no problems at all and if I hadnt seen any prior media reporting and metoffice warnings would have classified this as just a minor autumnal storm

It Is over now look the Center is now in the north Sea and speeding away. http://www.xcweather.co.uk/GB/observations. Press stating worst around 8-10am don't know what there talking about. will calm down rapidly in next hour.

Well what is the picture this morning as to how close the prediction came to occurring?

 

00z position and depth=51n07w and 981mb

It was predicted to be at 50.5N 9.5W depth and a bit below 980mb

So at that time there was nothing wrong with either the track over the pervious 36 hours or how it had deepened.

 

If you look at the XC chart general track the low runs from south Wales to exit the east coast in the Wash area. The mid week projections and even those in the first part of the weekend were for it to track mid Cardigan Bay to exit north of the Humber. As time went on this was modified to be over or south of the Humber with the actual track as described above. The jet stream had been predicted to be stronger than it turned out to be. Just exactly what caused these factors to be so will need a detailed and comprehensive examination by professionals? No one on Net Wx really has access to enough data to get the total picture.

 

That said parts of the south coast and areas of SE England and parts of East Anglia had winds very close to the original estimate. The low was only some 6-7mb less deep than predicted. That prediction was made last Wednesday and maintained right up until late Saturday evening. It is quite amusing bearing in mind the stick it gets on Net Weather that the first large question mark on the storm was raised by the 18z run from GFS on Saturday!

 

So a track some 60-80 miles further south and about 6-7mb less deep. Not a forecasting disaster by any means, not perfect but the actual events did justify warnings although, as outlined above, they covered too large an area. But senior forecasters at Exeter are just like everyone else they do not have hindsight skills in advance!

Well I have to say , for my area , and any where west of Oxford , it's been a complete non event. 50mph gusts just doesn't do it , considering the hype by the met , and the bbc , and on hear , as usual there was last minute downgrades .
