HOBART ( pop 215,000 ) is Tasmania's capital, situated at sealevel at the base of Mt. Wellington ( 1270m ). Climate is temperate with a strong maritime influence.

October - Second month of spring

Classic springtime weather with front after front in a vigorous westerly airstream - between intense lows in the colder Southern Ocean to the south and high pressure over an anomalously warm continent. Showers or longer spells of rain and temporarily cold behind each change for snow to settle 800-1000m, lowering to 4-500m level at times. Often very windy. A warmer and drier airmass passed thru on the 19th to be followed by a return to an unstable but moderating westerly airflow, as high pressure at months end came to be centred further south, to be just north of Tasmania. Temperature anomalies based on 1981-2010 comparison. This is the 24th month in a row warmer than average.

Average maximum:  17.7 ( +0.4 )

Average minimum:  8.5 ( +0.2 )

Rainfall:  107mm ( average 62mm )

Rain days ( +1mm ):  11/from 15

My statistics for central Reading in October 2013:Average maximum: 16.4Average minimum: 10.2Average for month: 13.3Highest maximum: 20.3 (October 3 & 4)Lowest maximum: 11.0 (13)Highest minimum: 15.5 (22)Lowest minimum: 0.9 (30)Frosts: 1 ground frost, no air frostsRainfall: Reading University shows around 100mm for the month, which is wetter than average.Sunshine: Reading University shows around 90 hours for the month, which is below average.

In many ways a typical changeable Atlantic-driven October - somewhat dull and wet but significantly warmer than average with a SW flow dominating.  The first 9 days were mild and mainly dry, followed by a cold and wet spell that gave way to a warm, humid and thundery spell around the 22nd.  The night of 21/22 was unusually warm for the season with a minimum of 15.5.  The final week was generally cool and windy with showers and a single ground frost, on the morning of the 30th.

The warmest October since 2006 and wettest since 2004. The mean minimum temperature of 10.0°C was the highest since 2006, with only four days recording a minimum temperature below 7°C in the entire month.

The first 9 days were very warm indeed with a mean temperature of 15.0°C, beaten only by 1995 and 2011. The 7th and 8th were particularly pleasant days with plenty of sunshine and temperatures reaching 20.8°C and 20.4°C respectively. The minimum temperature of 14.9°C on the 4th was also the 4th warmest in October in 34 years of records.

From the 10th temperatures were closer to average but felt rather cool due to a nagging north-easterly wind. It was also notably dull and wet with 43.6mm falling from the 10th-16th. The 13th was a particularly unpleasant day with persistent rain totalling 15.2mm. The wet weather continued into the second half of the month, though southerly winds returned and saw warmer temperatures and more in the way of sunshine.

The final five days of the month continued the unsettled theme but were much cooler. The minimum pressure reading of 976.8hPa on the 28th was the lowest of the year so far.

Overall a generally mild, but rather wet October with no great extremes.
