    Last night, I watched an Unexplained programme on Sky covering the Valentich case. The young pilot who mysteriously vanished over the Bass Straight in Australia in 1978.

    I'd never heard of this case before and I found it eerily fascinating and very intriguing. There where various possible explanations as to what happened to him, from suicide, a 'staged' disappearance, the death spin and, based on his last communication with Melbourne ATC, a UFO abduction.

    So, what do you think happened on that fateful October evening in 1978? Do you buy into the 'alien abduction' theory? Did Fredrick Valentich really see an alien craft? Or.......did he intentionally disappear for some reason?

    I remembe seeing a documentary on this. I doubt it was space aliens from the planet ZOG but hard to say what exactly it was, one of those things that was always remain a mystery I suppose.

    The Dyatlov Pass incident is one of the strangest mysteries I've come across, really creepy

    Thanks for those links, Bobby. I'd never heard of this case (Dyatlov) either but I shall be reading up on it and I will buy the book in the New year. Have you seen the film? If so, was it good?

    This sounds fascinating though and I wonder what happened to make them leave the tent in such a panic. Poor souls.

    This is an interesting article about the case;

    Based on eyewitness accounts the incident happened 3-15 miles offshore of King Island, Tasmania. The story still gets a running every now and then in Tasmania media.

    A few years ago several pieces of the plane were found washed up on King Island coastline. Described as "most probably" being Valentich's plane. So...it probably crashed into the sea.

    The story however gets complicated by the dozens of eye witnesses who reported seeing an erratic moving green light in the sky at the time. These witnesses included a teacher and a scientist. The photographs of something seemingly emerging from the sea at speed have proven not to be fakes.

    Things get more surreal  when a renowned Tasmanian historian proclaims on statewide radio that he was told that Valentich's father was in the possession of photographs taken by a fisherman off King Island, which purported to show the UFO and the Cessna in the same shots. Valentich Snr was handed over the photos and apparently kept the photos in a bank vault, but soon after they were apparently removed/stolen by person/s unknown. Valentich Snr died in 1999 and always held onto the belief that his son was abducted by a UFO, and he would be making a return.

    Historian comes out with news about the stolen photos at end of this interview: ( 10mins audio )

    Fascinating stuff and these stories do grab my attention. At the weekend I watched the Discovery Channel documentary 'Finding Amelia' trying to locate the plane and body of Amelia Earhart. It looks fairly certain they have located the general site and maybe her body was found only a few months after she disappeared, but now the remains have gone missing....
