Morning all.  Am loving the fact that weatheronline now has the EURO4 model, and it's even showing some snow for the north of our region  (nowhere near me though).

Just been out to the bin and noticed it feels a tad cooler out now than recent days.

Good King Wenceslas looked out,
On the Feast of Stephen,
There was no snow round about
But the rain was evil
Heavy windstorms came that night
Tho' the drink was flowing,
When a Met man came in sight
Said that it was blowing.

"Bring me mince pies, bring me wine
Bring me raincoat hither
Thou and I will walk the dog
In this stormy weather."
All the family out they went
Forth they went together
Through the strong wind's wild lament
In the awful weather

In his master's steps he trod
Where the rain was flooding
Whisky in a nice hip flask
Which was very warming
Therefore, everyone be sure
When the storm is coming
Rattling ‘round your house next week
This ditty you’ll be humming

Remember a storm like this growing up in the village on xmas day and it took out the power, many a xmas dinner got binned that day as they were all half cooked at the time, we were lucky to be 2 houses up on a different power grid, the rest had to wait it out, the irony was many had moved to electric cookers as the alternative gas was still newly piped in and wood burning/coal/oil was becoming frowned on so many people migrated to electric.

Yellow Warning of Wind for London & South East England :

Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Portsmouth, Southampton & West Sussex

Heavy rain and gales will affect south and west Wales, southwest England and some southern coastal counties of England on Wednesday evening. Gusts will reach 50 to 60 mph quite widely, with 70 mph gusts possible in exposed coastal areas. Heavy rain may also cause some localised flooding across parts of Wales and southwest England. The rain will clear and strongest winds will ease from the west.

The public should be aware of the potential for minor disruption.

Issued at:

1116 on Wed 18 Dec 2013

Valid from:

1500 on Wed 18 Dec 2013

Valid to:

2200 on Wed 18 Dec 2013

A deep area of low pressure will pass close to northwest Scotland during Wednesday evening, extending bands of heavy rain and gales across many areas during Wednesday afternoon and evening. Strongest gusts are likely in coastal areas exposed to the southerly winds. Heaviest rain will be on high ground in the west, with the potential for both river and surface water flooding.

Afternoon MAF and all,

I've just had salmon pate on toast as a sort of brunch before I start work....I've spent the morning getting my hair done so no surprise it's going to be wet and windy ....I hope it survives going out for a posh meal tonight !!

And I bet the morning after pictures still look like being dragged through a hedge backwards (Result, as that means a good night out)

My daughter is flying into city airport tonight at 8.30pm from Switzerland! Not sure what the wind speed limit is for planes landing but any chance flights will be cancelled?

Firstly you can keep an eye on the City airport weather here:

http://en.allmetsat.com/metar-taf/united-kingdom-ireland.php?icao=EGLC

There are varying limits on landing in crosswinds depending on the size and type of aircraft, but they are remarkably high really. Typically, a  Boeing 737 (probably too big for EGLC) can land in 35kt crosswinds and they have been known to land in up to 60 kts as long as it's behind them or a headwind, but the pilot makes the call based on airfield weather information. There are also considerations for taxiing and opening doors etc

Airbus have a huge document on it here:

Thanks Coast. That's some reading to do but it looks like she may be lucky if marginal from what I make of it. She had better make it as she has my present!

This may be of interest to anyone else expecting friends/family tonight landing at City Airport. Apparently my daughters aircraft is a Avro RJ100 Avroliner which, as far as I can discover, has a maximum demonstrated landing cross wind of 35kts or around 40mph. Should be interesting and I suspect there could be cancellations as they can't divert elsewhere I guess judging by tonight's wind forecast for London. I presume the same applies to all the other airports. Any pilots around?

See if they can pop her down on the South Circular!?

Looks like it could be just within limits Posted Image
