I think in mid Dec i mentioned something or other about keeping an eye on the Jet heading further south or Hinting towards that and how things can change for the better.

I know this is FI but this the kind of outlook for the New Year that we may be looking towards and very Snowy one at that Posted Image

But caution it's still a long way off....Posted Image

Yup I don't wanna jinx it but there does seem to be increasing signs for cold zonality as early as the end of next week which would make for an interesting change.

In the meantime today was just a bog standard Autumnal storm here, rather wet yes, rather windy yes, brief loss of power yes, but not as bad as it could of been, Fridays and Sundays storms still look potentially worse although Friday's has been moved significantly further north today.

Standard December day really, wet and quite windy - nothing special. We rarely do get anything special here though do we?

.............I never need an excuse to repost a pic from that event. The snowfall was so intense, it broke the branches of a lot of the trees around Knowle and Solihull.

Wind's picking up again here, rain starting again too. Temp is 9.4oC. Looks like a lot more rain to come, judging by the radar.

Here we go then, round two just getting underway here after 'pretty much' dry few hours. Getting pretty wild out there again.

Got seriously windy here and there's a bad looking squall line about to hit.

Quite the worst gales for years here atm.

Stay safe ever one!

As I expected, the 2nd phase of strong winds didnt last long here.

Now, the latest Meto symbols seem to suggest a few flakes of snow for the big day itself just reaching the West Midlands in the morning. Could we get a technical white Christmas? Will be close! :)

Strong winds for about half an hour 2230ish, and between 0900-1200, and raining pretty much all day- but I wouldn't say we had a day of gales by any means. No trees down or tiles blown off, at least round here. The flooding I think will be the main thing in Shrewsbury- the Severn has risen a lot since Sunday and the flood barriers are up in town.

The last real gale I remember? Saturday 20th March 2004, that was probably the windiest day here in the past 15 years. It was F8 sustained gusting to F10 for several hours around midday and into the afternoon, and it caused quite a lot of disruption around the Midlands (I remember someone being killed by flying debris at a football match, think it might have been Leicester?) and brought lots of trees down round here. Late Jan 2002 was another.

I expected to wake up to hear the wind roaring in the trees, but not so. As I peer out into the darkness it seems like little more than a moderate breeze at present; perhaps later?

Now THIS is a proper Atlantic storm...........

Ay we really do seem in the depths of autumn, mid Dec to mid Jan, the most westerly time of the year, still hopeful of pattern change in around 3 weeks, models even already flirting with some sort of change towards mid Jan

Atlantic storms are common for a British winter so I certainly wouldn't say that we are in the depths of autumn. Autumn is a transitional season. I agree though that in our climate, there is a lot of crossover between the weather types in the seasons, you could say this is close to late autumn,

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
