Well zero chance of snow before the 8th of Jan looking at the present runs. Need this vortex to power down and it's hanging in there well.

Although there has been snow in the peak district not a flake here yet which isn't that uncommon. Quite a few Decembers have had the first snow after this date. A good chance we will match 2001 though.

No air frosts yet either.

Had some snow (mostly preceded by rain) up at Crosspool a while back, other than that, nothing!

Snowless Decembers aren't unusual here (though they're always disappointing), but forget snow - I haven't had a single frost this month. No fog either (which was mostly confined to the SE). Just a complete poverty of wintry weather.

A dreadful state of affairs it must be said.

Not a flake of snow here in December and not looking likely to see any for the forseable either!

Trying to think of any snow less January's.  Certainly looking at the present model runs going to well into Jan before we get a chance of anything white which isn't a ground frost.

Ahh Jan 2002 looks a candidate.

1989, 1992 and 2009 are the only completely snowless Januarys in the last 25 years here PIT. January 2002 was cold at the start so is unlikely to be a contender.

December 2013 did come in snowless and frostless here in the end.

No sleet or snow here in December in the end, though I did manage one air frost (26th, -1.0C).

Since I started observing the weather closely in 1993, I haven't had a single sleet/snow free January although I reckon that a large majority of NE England would have been snowless in January 1989 in particular.

I wonder when the last snow free winter was for southern England away from hills?

Now that would be awful... Posted Image

Since 2000 i have never had a snowless January or February. Infact not to get a snow event (even a shower) in each winter month is rare.

Another nail tonight in snow coffin for this region. the remote chance has moved away northward. Looking like we're going to be snow and air frost free until at least mid month. I wonder if winter will start in spring?

Its looking pretty grim, taking the cold and snow season as a whole even 1988/89 was better to this point as it had recorded 1 day of lying snow, 4 days of falling snow and 4 air frosts (admittedly in November).

As for the winter stats (to 3rd Jan):

2013/14:

Mean Max: 9.2C

Air Frosts: 0

Sleet/Snow Falling: 0 days

Snow Lying at 0900: 0 days

Rainfall: 29.2mm

1988/89:

Mean Max: 9.1C

Air Frosts: 0

Sleet/Snow Falling: 0 days

Snow Lying at 0900: 0 days

Rainfall: 18.0mm

Unless something changes after mid-month its quickly heading towards stinker territory.

I normally wouldn't expect snow in December. So nothing particularly unusual about this past month.. we are in the firing line of the Atlantic after all. Mild and wet is what our winters should be like. I would probably expect a snow event where it sticks to the floor and we get at least 5cm maybe every 2 years?

However I definitely won't complain if we don't get snow this year, this mild weather is lovely for the heating bills (being a student myself Posted Image ) and it is lovely to hear the wind and rain against my window at night. Also I can go out in a light jacket. Win/win situation!
