A death at any time of year is awful, but around this time of year it really feels like a kick in the teeth.

Deepest sympathies with you. Losing a loved one is always very hard.

You've just witnessed history folks.

Stornoway reported a barometric pressure of 936.4mb at 1230pm today. Lowest recorded anywhere in the UK since December 1886.

Evening all

By the end of last night we had lost 4 6x6 fence panels and 5 seriously weighty fence posts sunk into concrete footings. Other posts are wobbling and are now strapped up until the new year.  The whole length of the fence must have caught the wind, like a sail, everything forced over and lifted out.

There were lots of chunky branches down on Reigate Heath this morning and one 40 foot tree snapped at its base and lying folorn.  We drove to Wimbledon to visit relatives and at the top of Reigate Hill a big tree had come down from the steep bank on the left as you ascend the hill, the trunk hugging the hillside and the branches reaching out to the middle of the busy A 217, dead but making it's presence felt, directing the traffic.

We set off for Brighton from Reigate about 4:15.  Our first choice of route had a feeble 'road closed'; sign which lots, including us, ignored, but not long after our decision we had to turn back, flooding, and trees down.  Alternative route, same thing happened.  Eventually found a way that worked but by the time we got to Brighton it had taken 150 minutes to go about 30 miles.

In Brighton it's been breezy but no more than usual, at least not until the last few minutes when the wind has whipped up and across, rather than straight into, the windows of the flat, suggesting there's a south easterly element to it.

Hang on though... since writing that, it's turned very windy indeed and is raining hard, firing straight into the windows so must now be coming from just south of south-west.  Interesting, as today and tomorrow are the allegedly quieter days of the week.

I hope you all have a lovely Christmas, if that's your thing, and for those for whom it isn't, peace and happiness.

AS

Edit:  Greenhithe, posted the above before I saw your e-mail, my sympathies to you and yours, tough at any time but more so now,,,

Evening all

Sorry for you news Greenhithe, never good any time of the year.

Back from my walk to the next village, nearly all set for the next few days, have a few jobs to complete in the morning (and for me it is not mucking out the stables).

Feeling cool out but by no means cold, wind has withdrawn now and saw a few stars, so clearing also it seems, lets see what the morning brings us weather wise.

Sorry to hear of your loss Greenhithe.

The current heavy rainfall across much of the South East could not have come at a worse time given the flooding and evacuations which were already occurring. On top of that are the power outtages still affecting almost 100,000 homes and businesses across our region.

I really feel for all the folk affected, and feel slightly guilty at wishing everyone a Happy Christmas, when clearly it's not going to be for many people.

Sorry to hear of your loss, Greenhithe. My thoughts are with you and your family at this sad time.

Just got back from Lowestoft loaded with gifts. :) It's been raining around here but oh, so calm after last nights chaos. Seems a bit eerie really.

Hope your all having a lovely evening. :)
