Don'tcha mean  a 7mph gust? That's about the best I got out of the last farce.

Different wind direction Laserguy which is the key.

Could be the strongest storm for quite a while, not often we get an amber warning. Could exceed 80mph in a few locations.

There are a few similarities between this storm and the Stephen's Day storm in 1998. I don't think it will be quite as severe but i wouldn't rule it out having 80% of the intensity.

Hi pit, as I said last week, I have the same issues with weak winds from E to SSW. Tend to be at least 25 mph below forecast. In the W you can add 20mph to gusts. Last week I got a random gust of 66.8 mph from SSE otherwise it was just low thirtys mph.

Definitely looking worse for the south than it was a couple of days ago..

As for the actual storm, the GFS has it bottoming out at 945mb, and currently the storm is at 952mb, on par with the GFS.

50-60mph even away from coasts looks quite likely on this run.

You lot up north are nuts :p you storm lovers,

Mate in reading has pretty much lost everything on The bottom floor of his house.

The Thames burst its banks today at reading..

So far he has lost all the Christmas presents he bought and his family had done, tv, sofas cost into the £1000s.. So please be careful for what you wish for because I reckon a lor of you would be the first to go mad if you lost so much.. Oh and there was no warning for him either

Well a least the main wind direction is South West so you may get lucky or unlucky depending on how one looks at stormy weather.

Now unless is the wine is this system moving a bit quicker than expected? Light to mod rain already making good inroads.

House has blown down before and as long as I'm not under it life will go on. As long as my friends are so safe that is all that matters.

Winds have suddenly picked up in the west of Ireland. A shift from virtually no wind to real nasty squalls in about an hour

Personally, I can't see the appeal of severe gales. See trees bowing in the wind doesn't do it for me.

Same here and I feel the same about flooding.Best case is loss of property, worst case loss of life but whatever our thoughts, it looks like we're going to get our share in the next 24 hours or so.

Heavy rain and blustery winds in south Tipperary. A complete switch from dry, calm and blue skies about 3 hours ago.

That looks horrible for Northern England.

Yes Manchester northwards in the firing line it would seem.

Looks pretty nasty for North Wales and the north Midlands too.

Gales are more than just trees blowing in the wind - try going outside during sustain speeds of 40-50mph with gusts exceeding 70mph and see what happens - you'll probably end up struggling to stand. You might also see trees falling and people's patio tables flying several gardens over. It's all very exciting. In reality, a strong gale should be more exciting than snow, because snow just falls to the ground and then gets dirty and slushy, not to mention how disruptive it is for the general public, and often a cause of death (more so cold), but alas, I love snow more than anything (weather-wise, that is).

Remember, there are millions of people in this  country who consider all of us completely bonkers because we love any type of weather with the devotion we show. I mean, how many people get odd looks from family or friends when they constantly look outside when it's snowing? Pretty weird, right? Well, to them it is!
