Reminds me of the hot rocks project that was tried down here a few years ago.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — In 2009, a borehole drilled at Krafla, northeast Iceland, as part of the Icelandic Deep Drilling Project (IDDP), unexpectedly penetrated into magma (molten rock) at only 2100 meters depth, with a temperature of 900-1000 C.  The borehole, IDDP-1, was the first in a series of wells being drilled by the IDDP in Iceland in the search for high-temperature geothermal resources.

If this could be developed it would be an excellent way to generate more sustainable power - there are no doubt a number of suitable sites around the globe where this could be practicable.

Agreed. Current technology has already advanced quite well for geothermal energy so there could perhaps be a global agreement for volcanic islands to power from geothermal.

There's plans for Iceland to export some of it's geothermal generated power to the UK.

This idea, or something similar, has been around a while. I remember reading something along these quite a few years ago.

Regarding hot rocks. They did the initial project around here in the 80s and 90s. They had some success but I believe had problems with the fracturing. It closed down through lack of funds and moved to Srasbourg.
