Hi - well - being an Northeast Coast American, I have grown up figuring out when it is reasonable to travel, and, not with relation to weather. I watch the weather like a hawk when it is stormy, and, yeah, I am obsessed. Here with the nature of the train services in the UK, that is almost always a good idea if one does not want to be stuck. Post-Christmas, I wanted to wait a day or so for travel but was outvoted by my ever-optimistic family and we spent 16.5 hours on a train, being dumped repeatedly en-route along the way to catch another (full) train. I certainly think a bit of weather watching is prudent if plans can be shifted one way or another.  Hence the question put here to those who are super good at weather stuff (and very helpful)  - timing can make a difference between a good journey and a diabolical one.

Hi Susie - noticed your post and can say that NetWeather enabled me to pick the ONE decent long w/e for a Devon/Cornwall trip during one of the most dismal summers on record - think it was 2008, might have been 2009. This was about 3 weeks in advance as well as we had to organise a friend to house sit for us (the cats).

So you're in the right place for UK weather — there's lots of it. We must be the only place where you can experience 4 seasons in one day.

My husband was most impressed and now he's getting into weather (meteorology) too (although his 'thing' is hurricanes). Btw, could you let me know if there's a similar site for NW USA/Canada? I'm thinking of moving.

PS One tiny gripe... could Paul buy a bit more server space? When things get ansty or busy like when there's a storm or big weather event, this site slows up — takes just a bit too long to load the next page.

Just been out to the local shop and it is eerily quiet and still out there but quite nippy.

Southernman isn't online at the moment but he asked me to say that he has today bought a weather station, usb enabled, for the garden, it was half price at Maplins, for £49, might help someone, no good asking me about as I'm not very technical, but he says he'll come on here later tonight and say about it if anyone is interested. The idea was to have it working in time for these storms but I don't think it will be, still it can check how much rain falls next week instead.

I've been looking at weather stations on Amazon today. Saw a nice, inexpensive one with some very good reviews. Anyway, it's under £20. :)

But do they hook up to a computer so you can read and record them on file? Husband says the cheapo ones are only for going outside and looking at. Is he right or wrong?

Our little barometer says the pressure is dropping like a stone, I tapped it a few minutes ago and it had fallen by 8 mb in 10 minutes now at 987.

Hi Guys. Well that's my first full week at my new company over and done with. It's hard being the new boys, after being at my last company for 13 years. Anyway, they are a nice friendly bunch and the job has great prospects.

Just been catching up on this, and the last thread and a lot seems to of happened. Some good, some bad. I just want to add my best wishes to some of the posters on here who are having it hard of late....

Onto the weather, and it cold, clear and dry here at the moment..... Was meant to be going to our friends tomorrow night, to have dinner, and use some unused fireworks for a display for the children. Looking at the forecast, it's a safe bet to say that (the latter) won't be happening.....

Evening all.

Hope everyone has had a nice week - despite the continued awful weather!

I'm due to travel tomorrow to Manchester. What time are we looking at this weather hitting? Is it the early hours of the morning? are the winds likely to be worse than the other day? it didn't seem that bad here other than a bit gusty from time to time. Thanks

Happy Friday!

Hi JP - what's your take on tomorrow's storm?Cheers fella

800,000 year old footprints discovered on the Norfolk Coast, apparently wandering rather aimlessly. I love this link back to ancient times but they were probably looking for somewhere out of the gale to put up the windbreak.... I think I must have miisread Yamkin's post earlier, and as a result have been awaiting a load of fat middle aged blokes racing by in inappropriate sports cars.  Surely that can be the only explanation for 100mph guts? AS

Really hope all went well today mate. And your mum is okay. ATB

Hi Leigh, you've quoted me but I suspect you meant to refer back to someone else about their Mum?

Yes, Iceni...I think he's right. The one I was looking at is just for outside. Don't think it hooks up to a computer. I'll have a gander at those and see what they cost.

tonight

http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/radar/

Posted Image

winds start light south westerly

will turn to turn stronger just around midnight

will get stronger as the isobars tighten overnight to 40-50 mph most areas

50-60 mph coastal and rural locations not shielded from the wind

rainfall

Posted Image

Posted Image

heavy rain moving in from midnight onwards

but some showers around ahead of the main rainband now

some very heavy downpours especially south of the thames

still raining as we get to rush hour

temps

Posted Image

cool first

warmer when rain arrives

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

tomorrow

Posted Image

winds strong and gusty

south westerly

50 mph poss higher gusts the norm

60mph poss higher coastal and rural

rain

Posted Image

Posted Image

showers some heavy being driven in through the day on the very strong wind

there will also be a fair amount of dryer spells too

temps

Posted Image

Posted Image

500 temps

Posted Image

Posted Image

temps around 6-8 degrees

however in any heavy showers temps could really drop very quick

i can see hail and poss the odd clap of thunder too

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

tomorrow night

Posted Image

this is where i see the strongest winds

isobars very tight now

so 50-60 mph generally

60-80 mph coastal and rural areas

rainfall

Posted Image

Posted Image

some clear spots and showers rattling through overnight

more general persistant rain incoming early morning poss early morning wintry bits but will not lay if it does and would only be patchy in the heavy bits

should clear before the following lunchtime

temps

Posted Image

Posted Image

500 s

Posted Image

Posted Image

not too cold unless you see some clear spots

unlikely you will see that as the rain will be hear at daybreak

around 6 degrees but if out will feel raw

winds should ease down around 4 ish in the morning

sunday

Posted Image

winds a more westerly and cold direction

will be breezy but not strong

rainfall

Posted Image

actually looks mainly dry

however there is a slim chance of some patchy wintry showers around

temps

Posted Image

500 s

Posted Image

cold around 5-6 degrees

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

sunday night

Posted Image

a weak north westerly flow

rainfall

Posted Image

barring the odd shower it looks mainly dry

temps

Posted Image

500s

Posted Image

if we avoid mist and cloud a frost is likely

will be a local thing though

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

monday

Posted Image

a weak west to north west and cold flow

trough over us and under 528 dam air

rainfall

Posted Image

some around in the afternoon and may be heavy for a time

temps

Posted Image

500s

Posted Image

to my eyes this has a rain to snow event showing here

temps 5-7 degrees

but dropping as we go through the day and certainly in any heavy showers

thats it from me until later
