Ah proper polar air... very rare all winter. Uppers are cold and the lapse rate is very high, hence why the snowline is 400m over Lakeland fells. Again only a handful of days this winter when it has been this low.

The rate of drop in temperature with height is at its greatest now through until May, which often surprises many who venture onto the fells. Many a time a green valley turns into a white wonderland with only a few 100m climb.

Conditions today were ripe for convection as well.

Tomorrow should see showers die out followed by what could be one of if not the coldest night of the season over Cumbria - mins widely down to -5 degrees, and wouldn't be surprised to see a -7 or -8 in sheltered favoured spots.

This time of year can be very variable, this time last year we were blanketed under a deep cover of snow and temps max of 2 degrees, the year before we were basking in sunshine and temps by the end of the month climbed to 23 degrees!

Loverly day here , warm in bright sunshine away from breeze !!....

Not the best day here.Sun and showers, some heavy and with hail.Sun seems to be getting the upper hand now but the rain has caused another delay to the great shed painting project currently going on.Never mind though, wife has found me plenty of inside jobs to do while it's peeing down outside.

we always do well in these setups being near to coast, but the price we pay is a lack of storms!!...

We got sunshine and showers....both at the same time now.Plenty of blue sky, one damn big black cloud and no guessing where that's parked itself.

First grass cut of the year done,( a bit late as had to get mower fixed)really nice now winds dropped , garden furniture is out so time for a beer in garden !!....

To wet for cutting grass here and TBH it's usually April before ours gets it's first cut.Last year we were into April before the snow melted off the lawn and it was the begining of May before I got the mower out.

So it looks like tonight we could reach a temperature lower than I've recorded all last winter! It only need to get lower than -2C!

What times the downgrade due then. This weekends was on time and tomorrow's forecast temperatures look far to high for settling snow but maybe after a winter of continuous winter let downs, spring may deliver something different.

The system is decaying as it heads over us tomorrow night but might give some people a suprise? Id be suprised if its anything better than sleet/ hail after this winter....

Same here, all winter we seem to have been a couple of degree C to high for settling snow.Always the wrong side of marginal and it's been the poorest winter for snow and frost I can ever remember.Shame really because with the wetness of the period, along with the exceptional winds we could have easily been looking at something exceptional for the right reasons rather than the reasons we ended up with.
