Life hots up for British birds

• Researchers say climate change will improve survival rates of British bird - the long-tailed tit.• 20-year study finds spring weather has more influence on the small birds’ numbers, not winter as previously thought.

This sounds daft but I have never seen long tailed tits in my garden in any numbers, just ones and twos.

After the storms, some large trees were blown over or damaged near by. nearest were a very large( for its age, as usual) Monterrey Cypress tree next door but one, an Oak and a Norway Spruce from my garden , this has changed our sunlight somewhat, we are now in full sun 100% compared to 60% of the day.

No bull, seen over the last two weeks more Long tailed Tits than ever, saw over 10 the other day LOL

Mrs loves the sun and the birds, win, win.....

Give it another 20 years and maybe autumn will have more influence on small bird numbers

I note that the Great Tit has proliferated in recent years, The Great Tit has adapted well to human changes in the environment and is a common and familiar bird in urban parks and gardens and internet forums.

Surprisingly, in inner west London, I've been seeing a feeding flock of 40-60 long-tailed tits in winter - usually led by a great tit or two - for the last ten years or so. The harsher winters of the last couple of years knocked numbers down by this time of the year. I'm happy to report that the smaller flock of about 30 doesn't seem to have diminished much at all this winter. They're a lovely sight bouncing round in the tree outside the kitchen window.

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
