  1. 1. What do you want from Summer 2014?

    • Heat waves - like 2003, 2006 and 2013
    • A typical British summer
    • Cool and wet - like 2007 and 2012
    • Thundery showers and thunderstorms - like 28 June 2012 and 23 July 2013
    • High pressure - average temperatures, but settled
    • Other - specify below...

Yes I know it's only mid-April, but I think it's a good time to start asking "what do you want for summer" as late April and May can often be quite summery. You can select more than one option in the poll, just in case you want a few weather types. For example, I chosen heatwaves and thunderstorms - 'cause let's face it, it's what a summer should be! No continuous heatwave as i dont want the countryside to look parched and there to be wildfires everywhere. But a summer with frequent hot spells and occasional deluges from thunderstorms. I want to be often waking up to clear blue skies in the morning and enjoying calm sultry evenings.

High pressure, would prefer 21-24c but warmer than that would be preferable to cooler.

Yeah, if not hot, certainly settled. I hate cool summers!

Cool and wet. Certainly not warm or hot. Hate the smell of sunblock, beer and bbq's. Seeing people sat on deckchairs, slowly reddening and vegetating in their garden while music blares and their kids run around screaming. Roll on winter and earlier dark nights. Posted Image

Warm with decent hot spells, mixed with some showers and the odd storm to mix it up, we need the rain to keep the countryside alive (and us) but some long calm and warm spells would be nice, a full on heat wave would be bad as would a dull damp summer.

I'm not really a heatwave fan in all honesty. (Especially as our office buildings have the excellent design of glass ceilings....) The only time I don't mind it, is if it is broken up by nice big thunderstorms to tone down the humidity a bit.

Other than that, give me settled weather with sunshine, 24-26 degrees Celsius and a gentle warm breeze. Lovely! Posted Image

Overall, A summer like Florida would be the one with temperatures between 28-32C with the odd 34C thrown in and LOTS of thunder and lightning!! Its a little far fetched I know.

A typical UK summer would be alright. Average high in July here is 21C, with 206 hours of sun, which is acceptable. More thunderstorms would be nice though.

A fleeting glimpse into the gaping maw of Hell itself. Be strong, calm and composed - a sniff of Autumn will be in the air before you know it. Buy black curtains and avoid the light - it will hurt you. Oh, and barbeques too.

I have been training with my Tibetan monk friend who also happens to be a vampire. He's taught me the ways of calmness whilst also giving me tips on how to avoid the rays of the sun. He said he can't help with the bbq's or screaming kids though.

I want a cool and not too wet summer (always cool with alternating spells of persistent cool light rain and cool sunshine and light showers and cool clear high pressure weather patterns) but one that will make summers 2007 and 2012 look like heatwaves by comparison.  So something like summers 1993 and 2011 and colder.  Posted Image

I'm glad that high-pressure is here and I'm glad that it looks to be close by until early May. My only concern is that persistant highs are usually then followed by persistant lows, and so I really hope that summer will not be a constant bombardment of low-pressure systems, just like 2012 was.

Im hopeing for a repeat of 1816 - "the year without summer"!

as someone with light sensitive eyes (after a eye injury) and someone that hates the heat, i would be over the moon with this (minus the crop failures and famine!), and plenty of snow thrown in!

That would certainly cause some headlines!

    come on you volcanoes!!

Ah a man after me own heart. Wish all years would come without a summer. How neat would that be?

I would like a warm and sunny summer, although another low sea ice year and the warm phase of the AMO won't bode well for that!

    • Growing risk of thunderstorms this weekend and into early next week
