I remember reading about this in a book I had as a kid, after spending a minute looking at the photo and letting my brain work out angles, lines and other features, I concluded that the landscape line was just ground level and a person was stood there giving an optical illusion. There are tons of purposely made photographs nowadays that exploit things like that. It did intrigue me when I first saw it though, and yes, I can't believe it is 50 years old too.

But seriously, to me it looks like someone standing with their back to the camera and the way the sun is shining on them makes them seem all white and black.
