    Dull and wet but mild

Overall an unsettled but warmer than average May this. There was a short dry, very warm and quite sunny spell mid month, but with otherwise mediocre and, at times, wet weather.

1st – 4th: Mainly dry after a little rain 1st. Mild with a few sunny intervals

5th – 13th: Rather cloudy spell with rain at times, some heavy. 17.4mm 10th. Temperatures close to average but cool 10th/ 11th maxima around 13c. It was also quite windy at times.

14th – 18th: Dry and warm/ very warm with plenty of sunshine. High pressure over southern UK some decent sunny periods, and quite high temperatures by day but some clear, cool nights. 15th to 18th all reached above 20c, there were 2 likely ground frosts on 14th and 17th when it got down close to 2c, although I did not have a thermometer on the lawn and was not up early enough to witness this!

19th – 21st: Warm, and unsettled with some showery rain. It continued warm, the months highest reading of 22.4c 19th. The 19th also saw several thunderstorms pass by, with some much more distant ones just after midnight which nevertheless produced spectacular lightning. However, rainfall amounts during this period were only small and 21st was dry and sunny.

22nd – 25th: Dull, rather cool and unsettled. Less than one hours sun in total for these 4 days, with heavy rain at times, the months highest daily fall of 17.5mm being on 24th.

26th – 31st: Mostly dry and sometimes warm, limited sunshine. A few spits and showers but only a few sunny intervals, light winds.

Hobart, Tasmania in May ( 3rd month of autumn )

This was the sixth month in a row with above-average temperature and below-average rainfall, but not by big margins.

Temperature anomalies ( below ) compared to period 1981-2010.

    Average maximum:  15.6 ( +0.5 )

    Average minimum:  7.7 ( +0.1 )

    Rainfall:  31mm ( average 45mm )

    Rain days ( +1mm ):  7/from 17

May temperature extremes ( Records since 1881 )

    Highest maximum:  23.9 15th ( Record 25.7 in 1997 )

    Lowest maximum:  9.2 31st ( Record 6.1 in 1921 )

    Highest minimum:  14.9 16th ( Record 16.2 in 2005 )

    Lowest minimum:  2.4 9th ( Record -1.6 in 1902 )

The month: Rather cold and cloudy during the first week with scattered showers, and light snow near 1000m but only for a time. Thereafter, high pressure moved in from the west - initially cool and clear, then exceptionally mild mid-month as the high settled to the east. A steady stream of weakening cold fronts however brought short periods of patchy light rain, or a shower or two as winds temporarily turned cool onshore southerly. An evening change on the 27th brought a band of rain followed by a cold but dry airmass, and clear skies to see out the month.

    May 2014 Statistics

May was a month I could describe as fairly average, though days were often just above average, nights were often below to average. There was a threat of some unseasonably cool weather towards the end of the month which never truly materialised, although the night minimums will go down as consistent low and not particularly varied, as with normal. The highest temperature was 26C.. around average in the long term expectations for May. Other than that, May was very wet, going against the grain for tradition.. which normally has May as one of the drier months of the year.

Below are the statistics for my weather station during the month of May

    Mean Maximum: 17.4C
    Mean Minimum: 8.9C
    Overall Mean: 13.15C
