LetItSnow Yes we are at absolute peak high summer now, but that tilt of turning the tide away from the long days takes hold. By the second week of August the rate of change increases rapidly. Until then we stay in high summer mode.

 *Stormforce~beka* Evening @*Stormforce~beka*😊

The true darkness returned to Winchester on the 19th of July!

So you’ve already had 13 days with true darkness! 😊👍🏻

I'm enjoying this turn back to black, as it were, I just like the variety. A monoculture of weather, light, anything really - is boring. Given this current hot spell, I'm definitely now dreaming of darker, cooler evenings...change of season...heck, even maybe the first frost!

Putting the heat aside, at least the darker nights help with sleep, for me at least. The next few weeks are one of those periods when the change starts to become more marked, and I for one look forward to that.

I don't like the nights drawing in as it reminds we are on the road to winter and I really struggle with my mood over the colder months. Perfect situation for me would be if we could be dark until about 7am and then have the light longer in the evening

Definitely noticing the nights drawing in now, the last week or so. Signs we are now moving into late summer.

SollyOlly Seeing and feeling the changing seasons is great,  yes.

However, a few weeks of "darkness" and SAD kicks in for me.

I reckon if the earth went round the sun in 6 months, I would enjoy a brief blast of darkness, with a quick return to light.  As it is, by the time we get to mid/late December it just a really long slog until the first signs of light in February.

According to timeanddate.com, the first 'night' occurred in my city on 26th July and it only lasted 8 minutes! Today it's 2 hours 4 minutes.

Maz totally get you mate. But I suffer from reverse SAD...! And find too much light stressful. Takes all sorts, I guess. I do usually like the light that we get in August, that golden sun (not too harsh) can be beautiful.

3 August brings a return to 'night' here, 3 evenings left of the 'light' evenings!

SollyOlly Yep, we are all different.  Your seeing the golden light in August, is my equivalent of the first feeling of warmth from the sun in February.

Sunset is at around 9:20 pm here, noticing the darker nights now. Think our first pre 9pm sunset is around the 20th I think? Given how poor the summer has been the March of the shortening evenings is pretty unwelcome.

We’re now out of the brightest quarter of the year. Our first pre 9pm sunset was Thursday last week.

Evening everyone. 🙂

Well, I think its now apparent to everyone that we're now out of the 'lightest' part of the year... The increasing darkness is now really noticeable at both ends of the day.

We're loosing daylight at over three and a half minutes a day now! Plus Monday (just gone)was my first pre 21:00 since the 11th of May.

I think its safe to say that we're now out of 'high summer', and everything is starting to look and feel a little bit more... well... Backendish. 😁

Dangerous55019 I would say we have around a week or so of high summer before that 'late' summer feel really kicks in!

 Don Evening @Don😊

I know what you mean… But remember, where you are in the U.K. could have a bearing on what you class as high summer, or the backendish feel of late summer.

Let me explain that a bit better…

Throughout June, and the early part of July, I find that the overhead summer sunlight is really bright and glarey… To me, it’s almost a white light… Exceptionally bright.

Now as we move towards the autumn equinox, the sun retreats from the north, and rises in the east, and sets in the west, (as opposed to rising in the northeast and setting in the northwest as it does in June) but as this happens, the quality of the sunlight alters… We loose that exceptionally bright, white light, and the sunlight starts to become more yellowish in colour.

Now with that in mind, now remember the further north you are, the more overhead and intense the sun will be… Hence why the far nether regions of Scotland, (Saxa Vord and the likes) have far more daylight than say anywhere in the south of England.

So if you ignore the heatwave/heat spikes of the British weather that will obviously affect the south to a far greater extent than northern Scotland, and just concentrate on the sunlight factor, you can see why technically Scotland will have a longer high summer period, than say you or I around the Marches area, and certainly more so than the good folk of Devon and Cornwall.

(Obviously the day to day weather will also have a massive impact on this as well… But for the sake of what I’m trying to say, we’ll leave this out of the equation. Lol 😂)

I hope that makes sense? 😊
