80sWeather I'm lucky in a sense that on the days I go in, I mostly leave work around 4.20 - 4.30pm, at the time when the increase in light levels is most noticeable, so really noticing it at the moment.

If I left at 5 it would be less noticeable (for now) I suspect.

Summer8906  Plus working an extra half hour can’t be good 😊

Seriously though it’s amazing how much more energy a couple of hours of extra daylight in the spring and summer gives the human body. Also a better sense of well being.

 80sWeather True 😉

Just putting the record straight: I do then work at home, sometimes until around 9pm to be fair.

I find being light in the afternoon makes a big difference, which is why I'm so opposed to switching to GMT at the end of Oct. I can see the need for GMT now (otherwise mornings would be silly dark), however, in late Oct and much of Nov, the solar noon is very early (11.50 here) meaning lop-sided days. I find the concept of sunrise before 7am and sunset before 5pm plain strange.

This time of year we have later solar noon , reaching around 12.20 in early Feb, so effectively we "naturally" gain half of the evening daylight lost when the clocks go back. GMT is a reasonable fit for Jan and early Feb but a terrible fit for late Oct and early/mid Nov.

Summer8906 In Czechia, the Christmas lights and markets generally start appearing right at the end of November. My town still has lights up everywhere, it certainly looks cheery.
I like to have some form of string light somewhere for most of the year. Brings me joy 🤩 Plenty over the Christmas period (inside and outside) and have many solar lights in the garden for the warmer months. Seem to be getting very popular here and I’m glad of it

Sunset now at 16:40.  Definitely noticeable compared to earlier in the month, with the lengthening daylight biased towards to the evening.  The past few days have been stunning, a parade of planets with a bright full moon making those early sunsets just a bit more bearable.  Temperatures were very respectable, approaching 13°C with light winds.  A strange combination to have calm, sunny conditions and high temperatures in January!

Didn’t go dark until around 4:30 pm tonight due to clear skies. 🌙

Earthshine Blimey I didn’t realise it had been that warm down in the south! 😮 It reached 9°C here yesterday and felt pleasant in sunshine and light winds, today not quite as mild though, I’m guessing maybe 7°C. Still very sunny though, and much milder than this time last week. ☀️

Realised when the sun returned this week that it was now solidly light until after 16.30 which is quite noticeable.

How early do we normally hit 6pm?

Last week felt more akin to late January with plenty of clear skies resulting in earlier dawn light and later sunset light than normal. This week feels a step backwards, had some very low light level days, today a good example making it feel especially gloomy and bleak mid winter in feel..Spring still feels a long way away, get January out of the way and psychologically things do change markedly. I saw some snowdrops today which is always a positive sign.

Comfortably light at 4.30 here even with considerable cloud, so very noticeable now that we are on the push towards lighter nights.

Mornings still not quite at that stage yet, though at least we are finally making better progress as we head towards the end of the month.

ANYWEATHER came here to say something similar. We're near enough a month past the winter solstice, but today's conditions reeked of peak December darkness

Feels every much dark days of December currently, three exceptionally low light level days. Roll on the light. Its around now people quite rightly tire of 3 months of gloom.

damianslaw Not so much for me, even with the mostly cloudy to dull conditions it's very noticeable that it's basically daylight beyond 4.30pm now.

From Friday until the end of the month it will be a different story, I suspect, sadly. I remember the end of January 2018 producing a temporary return to solstitial gloom following brighter conditions early and mid-month.

Certainly noticing a slight lengthening of the days here now too at 56N. Sunset today at 1620 GMT as opposed to the midwinter 1540 GMT. What a difference 40 minutes can make. Imbolc on 1st Feb which marks the halfway stage between the winter solstice and vernal equinox

quite gloomy yesterday with thick overcast skies, a bit brighter this morning. Heard a robin yesterday morning singing his heart out at 4am. Lovely tune.

Despite the gloomy weather I'm noticing the extra 40 minutes of evening light, so I'm looking forward to whenever we next get a clear sunset.

This afternoon the cloud isn't as thick as it was yesterday, and the light seems less wintry. In a couple of weeks it might look almost spring-like!

Sunset at 6pm is around March 10th here. At that time of year north vs south won't make any difference, but places further east will be later and places further west, earlier.

Before that, the first 5pm sunset is around Feb 4th here, assuming the upcoming extreme disturbed spell abates enough by then to allow us to enjoy it.

I've gone from having to close the curtains at 4.30, to today, where I barely need to close them now at 5.00. Of course, if we stayed on BST, I could enjoy another hour!
