And it's on with a new thread :D  I've had 4 rumbles in the past 2 days :) not bad considering I have been very storm starved for a very long time Lol. Looks to be more tomorrow, now who's going to strike lucky tomorrow  :) It's a shame I have nothing here tonight as the convection is awesome. Anyway, here's hoping to read some great reports and don't forget your pics and videos which are most appreciated :D

Good luck everyone :drunk:

Had a torrential downpour here about half an hour ago which didn't look like much

on radar but still managed to produce some hail before it cleared away.

Another interesting day tomorrow with that trough lying across Eastern areas.

I have a question about 'thunder days'.

Who exactly measures if thunder has been heard or not and does it have to be above a certain noise level?

Frequent lightning display over towards the coast to my north east (I'm in Newcastle), and I can see another smaller storm coming up to the south of it.

I'm at the north end of the TS line from Durham to E.Lothian, rumbling away

I would imagine it isn't really a thunder day but a lightning day, as the sferics are recorded and they could tot up that data each day. Not sure though, it is a Met Office stat you could check with them

A met observer would record any thunder heard at the station, that practice has now stopped as weather stations have become automatic. Amateurs such as myself still keep a thunder heard days record simply of any day we hear thunder at our location.

as Tony H posts things have changed since the 80-90 human observing stations and the WMO definition of what a thunderstorm was. I suspect as Jo suggests re sferics and it may need an e mail to Met to find out what is their definition now with so few full time observers around?

Hmmmmm, nobody has mentioned this yet, and I do use the BBC weather forecasts as a basic start point....

What do you think, and could it have an associated storm risk???

I know it's a newspaper that's rebound for sensationalistic weather front pages, but surely it's got to be based on facts from somewhere???

Measuring Thunder Days....

Surely, must be based on Lightning strikes...?

I have looked back on a thread, but can't remember where the query was answered... Not all lightning is recorded by detectors?  especially inter - cloud?

So accuracy of thunder days recorded also inaccurate?

I can't see how they could measure "thunder days" other than with a lightening detector. Most observation sites are now completely automated

I've emailed someone at the MetO who could ask the stats people

National Climate Information Centre (NCIC) UK Met office

"NCIC have produced long-term averages of days of thunder for the 1961-1990 and 1971-2000 averaging periods for the UK, but not for 1981-2010. Monthly days of thunder gridded datasets were produced up to December 2010, but this has subsequently been stopped as the network has become increasingly sparse."

so it was manually recorded in the hourly obs for many decades but now as many stations are automatic  the thunder days are not recorded enough. Lightning is recorded as an alternative dataset

Flooding already affecting parts of the NE http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/england/tyne_and_wear/

Lots of rain for the northern part of the region, cloudy but dry here in Darlington currently we had some rain earlier on but we've avoided the worst so far
