Well, here we are again, the nights are drawing in and the first cold pools of 850's are spilling there way into northern Siberia , so I thought I start this winter's thread :-)

So we have the right upper air temps and the precipitation, so I think we should be seeing the first snowfalls of the 'winter' over the next few days in Siberia, albeit fleeting.

Can't wait for the season to begin proper :-D

Here is to a great, snowy winter ay?

Love this thread :good: personally extensive snow cover really has no correlation, whether we are going to get a snowy winter. Many years Europe has been blanketed by snow while the likes us west of Belgium has been green.

Ice cover/retention compared to last year seems higher, no idea on depth though.

Ice is looking a lot better this year, closer to the 2000 average by the look of things

Indeed, still a month of drops to go before we see regrowth, but it would take some serious loses to drop below the minimum set in 2012

Fingers crossed, for a good cold winter this year..... I have a feeling it will be

There's no way we'll get near 2012 this year. During early summer of 2012, all the heat had raised the ocean temperatures in the Arctic enough to keep melt rates high through August and keep the ice quite thin and weak. We haven't had much sustained warmth over the Arctic this year (compared to recent years) so even though conditions the last few days have been favourable for high melt rates, we've actually been losing ice relatively slowly.

That's as may be but I really wish we could keep summer longer - it seems as though during the last 24 hours we have already slipped into autumn with the chart being littered with some nasty vicious lows.

Let's have a nice Indian summer, then a fairly brief but cold white winter alleviated by a warm dry spring.

summer has a way to go yet and we have autumn to pass, winter is as far ahead as it was before us.

Tough! :-p We all want winter, summer has been amazing, but the tides are changing towards autumn :-P

This bunch are gonna be like rabid dogs over snowfall this winter, I don't think I could cope with another snow-less winter like last, although it was 'fun' with all the storms (don't even think about jumping on that comment, you all know what I mean lol :-D)

Exceptional warmth for western Europe as October begins

There'll be exceptionally warm temperatures for the time of year affecting much of western Europe during the coming days, but that warmth will only graze the UK for now. Next weekend may see a more direct hit with the potential for southerly winds to draw some of that heat north and take temperatures into the mid or high-twenties. Read the full update here

Unusually warm September ending with some warm sunshine but also some rain

September will end up as another unusually warm month, and there will be some further warm, sunny spells to come as it draws to a close. Another bout of rain will be moving up from the southwest on Saturday, though. Read the full update here
