And here is the map to prove it.

What a lovely sight. Even Iceland's not too shabby. :yahoo:

Even in the sunshine and mid August, it's feeling distinctly autumnal here. Poplars have started leaf fall — real dead yellow leaves. Not long now.

Almost on our doorstep :)On a side note the outlook for the next 2 weeks is promising for the small amount of snow remaining in the UK.http://www.winterhighland.info/forum/read.php?2,160696,page=21

Lots to be positive about, but very early doors though.

and judging by the models greenland block and low heights trying to push southeast looks likely a rapid turn into autumn.

Well, one thing's for sure, I can't get much worse than last year here, with 0% lying snow through the whole winter!

Yep, last year was a real let down, no lying snow, frosts I could count on one hand, this year I'm expecting better returns on the snow & frost front.

As you can see in the Krasnoyarsk region (Russia) The area of snow has gotten bigger in 24 hours.

Ice in the north pole is somewhat lower in 24 hours

As for the uk going by the ecm/gfs and maybe a few other models there could be possible frost and some snow for the highlands of Scotland.

So some watching is needed.

The tiniest of sprinkles forecast for the Highlands - it's early and it's hopefully the beginning of another great ski season. :)

Does the highlands get snow this early?

With the right synoptics you can get fresh snow falling on the highest tops in any summer month - it melts quickly - either with the return to rain or sunshine.

They have had before. Won't last 5 minutes though. Still the melting of last years snow should slow down when usually august is the month which would do most damage.

The one you posted yesterday was indeed yesterday's chart, and the one you posted today was also yesterday's chart, I think they update it later on today or something

Great to see you on so early Steve, can someone refresh my memory please, is the westward movement of snow cover important because it has a strong correlation with a Russian high developing, and am I right in saying October is the critical month?

According to Cohen, it's the rate at which snow extent increases in October that's important. There are so many factors though...
