You have got marmalised on more than one occasion in the last few years by channel lows, battlegrounds etc.

You'd like to think so but not here. We've had the odd couple of inches, but it melts the same day.

2009 was the first time in over ten years that an inch of snow settled. January 2010 - I was in one of the very few places that didn't have snow settle. December 2010 was OK, but again, about 3 inches fell- it melted a few hours after it stopped snowing. Nothing in 2011/12, a little bit in 2013. Pathetic compared to the late 70's & early 80's

Im not generally going to be posting these charts very much this year unless one of 2 criteria are met, either a very good chart in the semi-reliable timeframe, or in this case, an exceptional chart, in fact it is quite a staggering run right up until the end of March and would probably not be far behind 47 or 63 in terms of UK chaos.

He lives on the Dorset coast - can't get much worse than that for snow in the UK, except for Cornwall.

Yes, if we cant have a Jan 87, lets have an Oct 87, but I would like to see a combination of a sting jet and a full on blizzard at the same time, 100mph winds and PPN totals off the scale on the radar at over 64mm per hour.

agree with that in a way, but our default pattern is not cold or bartlett, its stormy with Atlantic lows from mid Nov to mid Mar

bloody hell - unlucky, so you didn't get anything decent in Jan 13 when Gloucs and particularly South Wales got belted, in Dec 2010 we had lying snow almost continuously throughout the month but would have thought Sat 18th Dec that you would have had loads.

Yep! I'd take a snowy winter any year, but if that wasn't possible then a Bartlett would be the next best thing. A benign spell is much better than flooding, ripped off roofs, uprooted trees, and downed power lines...

You could say that about anything though, you often get floods after a cold spell due to thawing snow, if you go down that route then the only weather that anyone should want is sunny dry weather with the odd day of continuous light-moderate rain to avoid droughts but then is it really worth being a weather fan at all then??

I love gales - very exciting. I like going outside and feeling the wind pushing against me - reminds me of when I was a kid and I would lean forward and let the wind push me back. I just enjoy weather that gets people talking - I like to see how people react. It's funny when there's a downpour or thunderstorm coming and everyone scurries away and screams.

That sounds sinister, but it isn't.. really. Lol.

But yeah, I'd love a cold spell - or just snow. Doesn't have to be very cold. Last winter wasn't even that mild but the lack of snow was something I've never witnessed before.

I liked February 2008 as well. February 2008 had high pressure dominating the month with very low rainfall, high sunshine (widely above 100 hours), frosty nights, mild days with high diurnal ranges. We had one ice day and snow as well. That month we had days with lows of -8C and highs of 6C which is unusual for winter as winter has the lowest difference between average highs and lows.

You speak for yourself - It's all horses for courses - I for one love endless blue skies, both winter and summer with the odd bit of precipitation to stave off the droughts.

There is nothing quite like the beauty of trees, snow, autumn leaves etc silhouetted against a crystal blue azure sky - I would dread another winter like the last one - those endless tramlines shunting in low after low can be quite boring and get depressing in the end if you pardon the pun.

I'll take a winter dominated by a Scandy High any day, followed by long settled spells in the spring, summer and autumn.

Winters dominated by Scandinavian Highs have a tendency to be dry and cloudy rather than dry and sunny (though of course if the high is oriented correctly and/or ridges westwards to the north of the British Isles at times then they can also be snowy).

We haven't had a lengthy cold anticyclonic spell in winter for a while, I think February 2012 was the last one and that gradually warmed up. A stormy November / early December, cold frosty 10th-20th December, then snowfall from the 21st onwards would be nice.

Not in January 1985, or February 1986 and 1956, or the great winter of1963 , January 1979,December 2009 or 2010, none of these winters lead to flooding  after a cold spell and many others. I think we can say as well, we often don't get floods after a cold spell, or due to  snow thawing.

nothing here is ever going to come close to a Canadian winter not even 62-63 type season..so im really hoping for a dry mild winter for me..something like 89-90 would do if not then 91-92 would do just as well..as long as it doesn't constantly pour with rain.
