The seventh update makes no change to the chances of snow falling on Christmas day in the south and the north of the UK. In the short to medium term a rather unsettled pattern is expected to continue. Following on from the settled and warm September the TWO view is this autumnal pattern to date favours a relatively mild westerly flow during the Christmas period but it should be pointed out that many people would dispute or disagree with this.

In a relatively mild south westerly flow high ground in northern parts of the UK would have the best chance of seeing snow.

Recent years have brought a range of weather during the festive season to the UK, and there have been some notable cold spells. This year at the present time background signals look fairly neutral but things could change during the autumn.

In Cleadon in Tyne and Wear I had white New Years (in the snow lying sense) in 1995, 1997, 2002, 2006 and 2010, with 2010 being the most outstanding example.  There was <50% snow cover in 1996 and 2001, left over from earlier snowfalls.  Sleet/snow also fell on New Year's Day in 2005.  Thus, I don't think that the North East region is overdue a white New Year- indeed for snow lying there have been more white New Years than white Christmases (with just four years, 1993, 1995, 2009 and 2010, having widespread snow cover across the region on Christmas Day).

TheWeatherOutlook says

The eighth update increases the chances of snow falling on Christmas day in the south and the north of the UK. Weather patterns through the autumn have brought above average temperatures to the UK. In the short to medium term this trend is likely to continue, but with signs of the Polar Vortex not yet becoming strongly established it is thought colder air could be displaced further south during the early part of the winter.

TheWeatherOutlook says

Into November and the ninth updates make no change to the chances of snow falling on Christmas day in the south and the north of the UK. The first half of November is expected to be mostly unsettled but there have been some very tentative signs of high pressure blocking on a few of the computer model runs. The general outlook currently looks less mobile than at the same time last year and this could increase the chance of colder snaps during December.

The tenth updates slightly increases the chances of snow falling on Christmas day in the south and the north of the UK. The first half of November is expected to be mostly unsettled but there are now signs of high pressure blocking on a significant number of computer model runs. If this trend continues the chances of colder weather will increase during December and possibly through the Xmas period.

Santa is just too vague. :unknw:   They could at least give us a west and east Scotland - even the metoffice do that - come on Santa! Or do I need to add that to my Christmas list??  If so, I have been very good this year - can I have one week of heavy snow please? :cold:

The bookmakers are only giving odds of 5/1 for falling snow in London on Christmas Day! Considering it hardly ever happens, those odds are ridiculous! Do they know something we don't or do they always give crappy odds? :unknw: There are hints of a cold spell in mid December though, with the NAO an AO going negative! How did Ladbrokes know? :unknw:

No, Santa works on a tight budget - he has lots of presents to buy, and the cost of reindeer fuel has gone through the roof in recent years.

time you started a carrot farm Paul, I suspect its 'cos Santa insists on having certain drinks and mince pies every time he falls down a chimney!

Glad to see this back. Hopefully the percentage chance of snow will rise, unlike last year when Santa came on a water ski :p

TheWeatherOutlook says

The eleventh makes no change to the chances of snow falling on Christmas day in the south and the north of the UK. There are signs of the westerly flow weakening during the second half of November as pressure remains high over the continent. In the shorter term this could bring further mild weather from the south, but if there is a tendency for a more blocked pattern to last into December the chances of colder snaps may increase as we approach the Xmas period.

That looks meteorological gibberish to me. That does not make any sense at all.
